Fifth-year point guard suffered a knee injury on Saturday at Houston
FORT WORTH – TCU point guard Jaden Owens suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in her right knee and will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
The injury occurred in the first quarter of the Horned Frogs game at Houston on Saturday.
Owens averaged 8.4 points and 7.2 assists per game prior to her injury. She ranked third nationally in total assists (115) and fifth in assists per game. Owens was the active Big 12 leader in both categories.
The 5-7 guard blossomed at TCU and under the tutelage of head coach Mark Campbell after transferring to Fort Worth in May following a three-year run at Baylor.
She dished out 71 dimes over her first 10 games in purple and white. The 71 assists were the most by any player in program history in a 10-game stretch to start a season. Owens averaged an NCAA-leading 10 assists per game over six outings in December. She finished with 11 assists in consecutive games against Tulsa and ACU on Dec. 1-5, which were the most in a game by a TCU player in five years.
Owens was on track to become TCU's single-season program record-holder for total assists and assists per game average. She was just 70 assists shy of surpassing Natasha Lacy's 2004-05 season record.
Originally from Plano, Texas, Owens guided the Horned Frogs to an undefeated run through nonconference play for the first time ever and helped the program achieve its earliest ranking in The Associated Press poll in 13 seasons. The Horned Frogs' 14 straight wins to begin the year was the longest winning streak to start a season in the history of TCU men's and women's basketball.
Owens appeared in 126 games across her five-year college career. She accumulated 573 points and 421 assists. Owens was a four-time NCAA Tournament participant at UCLA (2019-20) and Baylor (2020-23).
TCU (14-4, 1-4 Big 12) returns to the court at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday against No. 7 Kansas State in Schollmaier Arena.
