Horned Frogs come back from 12 points down in defensive battle

FORT WORTH - An Emanuel Miller layup with 6.7 seconds to play put TCU on top for good in a 68-67 win over No. 2 Houston in a defensive battle Saturday evening in Schollmaier Arena.

The Horned Frogs (13-3, 2-1) trailed 67-63 with 1:27 to play following a 3-pointer by Jamal Shead of Houston (14-2, 1-2). TCU answered on the next possession with one of four 3-pointers in the game by Trevian Tennyson.

A missed shot by LJ Cryer and a missed free throw by J'Wan Roberts kept TCU down one with 35 seconds left. After the Miller layup to give TCU a one-point lead, Micah Peavy stole the ball from Damian Dunn just past Houston's 3-point line and the Cougars never got a shot off.

TCU's win was its second-straight over an AP Top 10-ranked opponent after beating No. 9 Oklahoma on Wednesday. It was also the Frogs' top-ranked win at home since 2020 when it defeated No. 2 Baylor.

Miller led the Frogs with 13 points and three rebounds and five assists. He was joined in double-figures by Tennyson's 12 points and 11 points by Avery Anderson III who finished with a team-high six assists.

The Frogs trailed by as many as 12 points with 8:14 remaining in the first half, but ended the half scoring nine unanswered points. Despite shooting 27.3 percent in the period, TCU trailed by two, 31-29, thanks to a 13-of-20 effort from the free throw line.

A three by Anderson two-minutes into the second half gave TCU its first lead since 3-0. The Frogs maintained the lead until a 3-pointer by Dunn with 4:22 remaining.

TCU shot 55.2 percent in the second half and was 4-for-4 from 3-point range, part of an 8-for-15 game from deep.

Roberts led the Cougars with a season-high 20 points.

TCU travels to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday. The game will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

TCU improved to 26-48 all-time against Houston and improved to 19-14 in home matchups.
Jamie Dixon improved to 1-0 against Houston as a head coach.
It tied for TCU's highest-ranked win at home in program history. It was the Frogs' top-ranked win at home since a victory over No. 2 Baylor, 75-72, on Feb. 29, 2020.
TCU defeated its second-straight Top 10 team. The Frogs defeated No. 9 Oklahoma on Wednesday.

Individual Notes

Emanuel Miller led the Frogs in scoring with 13 points. It was the ninth time this season he led the team in scoring and his 14th game this season in double-digits.
Miller continues to climb TCU's all-time scoring list. He's tied with George Mcleod at No. 38 with 1,013 points.
Miller also had five assists, tying his season-high.
Trevian Tennyson scored 12 points. It was the fourth time in five games he has scored in double-figures.
Tennyson made four threes on six attempts. He has multiple 3-pointers in eight games this season.
Avery Anderson scored 11 points. It was his fifth game this season in double-figures.
Anderson led TCU in assists for the sixth time this season with six.
Jameer Nelson Jr. scored 13 points, his 11th game this season in double-figures.
