Frogs dismantle the Tritons 4-0
PEACHTREE, GEORGIA – TCU women's tennis dismantled the Tritons in Wednesday's first round action at the NIT Championship. The Horned Frogs swept UC San Diego and punched their ticket to the semifinals at the Peachtree Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (14-9) were led by sophomore Jade Otway who woke her team up in the early morning match. TCU took control of the match early on against UC San Diego (10-13) and never wavered.
Head coach Lee Taylor Walker mixed up the doubles lineup for the first round of the tournament. Yu-Chin Tsai and Helena Narmont took their talents to court No. 3. The duo won the first doubles match in NIT history in dominate fashion 6-1. Mercedes Aristegui and Otway followed suit with an impressive 6-3 win on court No. 2.
In singles, Otway set the table first only losing one game in her straight set victory on court No. 3. She collected a (6-0, 6-1) win to put her team up by two.
Lemaitre completed her match in similar fashion dropping just two games (6-1, 6-1). TCU completed their sweep with the play of junior Destinee Martins on court No. 5 (6-4, 6-2).
Coach Walker enjoyed the start he saw to the tournament despite the early start.
"Great job by the ladies this morning. Morning matches are never easy for obvious reasons, but the team was up at 5 a.m. and professionally preparing, going through their routines with positive attitudes . That is really what set the tone for a dominant win and start to the tourney. It's been three and half weeks since last competition, so there were a few things that took some time to work out, but I thought by the end everyone settled in and did a solid job of closing out. Tiphanie and Jade were nearly flawless. I loved their focus down the stretch to lock up those points for us quickly. Once they got off the court, Denny was off to the races and ended a confident start to the tourney for us. We were grateful to see some TCU alumni in the stands and hope to see more come out throughout the week."
Up Next: TCU will take on the winner of Appalachian State and Wyoming on Friday, May 19 at the Peachtree Tennis Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
