Three players finished with double-doubles in 81-67 win
FORT WORTH – The Horned Frogs ended the 2023 calendar year on the highest of notes.
No. 23 TCU opened Big 12 play with a wire-to-wire 81-67 takedown of BYU on Saturday in Schollmaier Arena.
The Horned Frogs swelled their season record to 14-0 – three wins shy of the longest winning streak in TCU basketball history – ahead of a ranked vs. ranked showdown at No. 10 Baylor on Wednesday.
TCU won its Big 12 opener for the first time in four seasons and is now one of just eight remaining unbeatens across the national ranks.
The Horned Frogs shot 50 percent from the field and behind the arc in a game they led by as many as 23 points early in the fourth quarter. Four player scored in double figures, three of whom posted double-doubles.
Sedona Prince paired a game-leading 25 points with 10 rebounds and three blocks. Prince went 10-20 from the field. Prince's double-double was her ninth of the season, tying her for third nationally.
Agnes Emma-Nnopu picked up her second double-double in her last three outings, tallying 14 points and a team-leading 11 boards. The 5-11 guard accounted for half of TCU's makes from distance, finishing 4-7 from downtown.
The Frogs' third double-double belonged to Jaden Owens, who scored a TCU career high 14 points along with 10 assists. Owens has dished out 10-or-more assists in five of her last six outings and tallied the most assists of any player in the country in December with 60.
Madison Conner poured in 21 points to pace the Horned Frogs offense once more. Conner, the Big 12's leading scorer, netted 14 of her points in the second half.
TCU scored nine unanswered points over the contest's first 2:52, only for BYU (10-4) to respond with a 9-0 of its own. Consecutive 3-pointers by Conner and Emma-Nnopu, though, punctuated an 8-0 TCU counterpunch to put the Horned Frogs ahead for good at 17-9 with 2:21 left in the period. The Cougars got within two possessions of TCU just once the rest of the way.
A deep ball from the top of the key by Prince – TCU hit five straight 3-pointers to begin the game – widened the Horned Frogs' lead to 27-15 early in the second frame. Consecutive buckets in the paint by the center maintained TCU's double digit edge at 31-21 with 6:06 remaining in the first half.
Prince registered nine of her 13 first half points in the game's first 20 minutes.
A buzzer-beater by Conner via a drive off the backboard near the restricted area staked TCU to a 39-31 halftime lead.
Arguably as invaluable than Prince's offensive production was the work she did on BYU's Lauren Gustin (16.4 ppg, 15.6 rpg). Prince nullified Gustin, the national leader in double-doubles (12), at the other end of the court all half and afternoon. Gustin entered the locker room with four points. She finished the game with 16 rebounds and 10 points but was 5-17 from the field, with most of her shots contested by Prince or Emma-Nnopu.
TCU enjoyed a 38-20 discrepancy in points in the paint.
Conner scored eight straight points out of the intermission, widening TCU's advantage to 47-33. TCU assumed its first 20-point lead of the evening on the strength of five consecutive points by Conner and Prince that made the score 61-40 with 46 seconds left in the quarter.
Consecutive and-ones from Prince and Owens effectively put the game to bed at 74-55 at the 4:27 mark of the final frame.
TCU finished with a 35-31 advantage on the glass.
The Horned Frogs' six turnovers were their second-fewest in a game in 2023-24.
BYU finished 24-62 from the field (38 percent)
