Alvarez and Moreno represent Spain, Gonzalez competes for Puerto Rico
FORT WORTH – TCU beach volleyball players Daniela Alvarez, Tania Moreno and Maria Gonzalez will compete at the 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Alvarez and Moreno will represent Team Spain while Gonzalez competes for Team Puerto Rico. The competition begins Friday, Oct. 6 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. The World Championships occur every two years and the best athletes from across the world take part.
"Having the three of them make it to the World Championships is an unbelievable accomplishment," head coach Hector Gutierrez said. "It speaks volumes to the level of how good these athletes are and how lucky we are to have them on our squad. We have world-class athletes here playing beach volleyball at TCU."
Alvarez and Moreno begin play in Pool 1 against USA's Cannon and Kraft at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. Gonzalez will make her World Championships debut with her teammate Allanis Navas at 11:00 a.m. on Oct. 7 against Netherlands' Schoon/Stam.
Gonzalez and team Puerto Rico are making history as the first women's team from Puerto Rico to advance to the World Championships. Gonzalez and Navas solidified their qualifying spot at the World Championships after winning the North, Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) Volleyball Confederation World Qualifier against USA's Kelley Kolinske and Hailey Harward in the gold medal match in June of this year.
No stranger to the World Championships stage, Alvarez garnered silver at the 2021 U21 World Championships with Team Spain.
Alvarez, Gonzalez and Moreno were instrumental in TCU's historic beach volleyball season this year. Alvarez and Moreno, the AVCA Pair of the Year, finished the season at 34-1 en route to TCU's Final Four appearance.
Maria Gonzalez posted a 26-3 individual record in the 2023 season. The Horned Frogs won a CCSA Conference Championship and finished the regular season at 37-3. The TCU beach volleyball team was ranked No. 1 in the AVCA Coaches Poll for six consecutive weeks while also defeating 20 ranked opponents.
Alvarez, Gonzalez and Moreno are all taking a year away from TCU beach volleyball to focus on qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
