For the second year in a row, the Horned Frogs receive an invitation to nationals.
FORT WORTH – The No. 2 TCU beach volleyball team (38-3) is headed to Gulf Shores, Ala. for the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive season. The tournament is scheduled for May 4-8, featuring the 16 best teams from across the country. This is the second time in program history that the Horned Frogs have received an invitation to the tournament.
No. 2 seed, TCU will face No. 15 seed, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday for the first round of the tournament at 1:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
"We are really happy to be number two seed in the tournament," Head Coach Hector Guiterrez said. "This is something that doesn't happen every year and it shows that all the hard work we have put in during the regular season. You don't become the number two seed at nationals if you don't do your homework. We can see the level of this year and nationals is full of a lot of good teams. At nationals, anything can happen, we just have to take it one match at a time,We just want to will it all and we have to take it step by step."
2022 has been a year of firsts for the Horned Frogs. The year began with back-to-back CCSA pairings of the week within the first two weeks of the season: Daniela Alvarez/Tania Moreno (February 26-27) and Alexis Filippone/Hailey Hamlett (March 5-6). The team quickly set two team records for most ranked victories in a single season (21 and counting) and most wins in program history (38 and counting).
One individual and two pairings also became program record holders this season. Maria Gonzalez and Ana Vergara set the new standard for best start in program history by a pairing with nine wins. Megan Muret opened her season setting the best start to a season by an individual with 11 wins and closed it by setting most single season victories by an individual with 32. Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno set two records, most career wins at 50 and most career ranked wins at 23.
TCU also cleaned house in post season awards. Ana Vergara was named CCSA Freshman of the Year, Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno were named CCSA Pair of the Year and Hector Gutierrez was named CCSA Coach of the Year. Alvarez/Moreno and Vergara/Gonzalez were named to the CCSA All-Conference Team and Hailey Hamlett and Ana Vergara were named to the CCSA All-Freshman Team. Three Horned Frogs were named AVCA All-America's: Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno were selected to the first team and Kaylie McHugh to the second team.
This weekend, The Horned Frogs finished as the runner-up at the CCSA Conference Tournament. The Frogs swept Tulane, 5-0, in the first round of the tournament. They faced No. 4 FSU in the semifinal and took a 3-2 victory over the Seminoles to secure their place in the conference championship. TCU took on FSU for the second time in the title match but fell short, 3-1. Daniela Alvarez/Tania Moreno and Sutton MacTavish/Kaylie McHugh were named to the All-Tournament team for their performance during the tournament.
