TCU bested by Baylor in Big 12 Title match
FORT WORTH – No. 1-seeded No. 1-nationally ranked TCU men's tennis came up short in capturing its third Big 12 Championship title, falling to No. 2-seeded and No. 4-nationally ranked Baylor, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
In a match that began outdoors and was later moved indoors due to inclement weather, the Horned Frogs (23-4) fell behind early after dropping the doubles point and the Bears (26-3) would go onto secure the win with three more singles victories.
"Tough loss today," said TCU head coach David Roditi. "It is disappointing to lose for the championship, here at home and in front of a great crowd. Baylor played well and they won some critical matches. We could have played better in doubles and I feel that we can improve some critical things in our singles matches.
"I would like to believe this loss will prepare us better for nationals. We have two weeks to prepare and get ourselves ready for it, in all ways – mentally, emotionally and technically. There is no doubt in our minds that our players left it all out there and Baylor played better today. Thank you to Big 12, our great fans, and all our staff and administrators."
In doubles action, Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley fell on Court 1 to Finn Bass and Sven Lah (3-6), and Baylor managed to secure the doubles point when Sander Jong and Lui Maxted were bested to Juampi Mazzuchi and Matias Soto (4-6).
The Bears upped the ante with a 3-0 lead when TCU's Tomas Jirousek fell in the No. 6 spot to Mazzuchi (3-6, 1-6) and Pedro Vives dropped the No. 5 singles match to Tadeas Paroulek (5-7, 1-4). Fomba got the Frogs on the board though, with a No. 1 win over Adrian Boitan (6-4, 7-5).
Fearnley secured the next point with a win in No. 4 singles, as he downed Bass in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 7-5). Juan Carlos Aguilar had just dropped the second set to Baylor's Soto and that match was heading to a decisive third set, while Sander Jong and Lah were in the middle of their third set, with Song up 3-2 in the frame, before the match was paused due to lightening in the area.
Nearly one hour later, the match was then forced indoors and the Bears managed to secure the contest and Big 12 Championship when Soto wrapped up his win over Aguilar (6-7, 6-4, 6-3).
The Horned Frogs will now await word of its NCAA Tournament fate when teams will be announced in a selection show, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3.
