Horned Frogs defeat No. 3 Florida State, improve to 9-0 this season

FORT WORTH -- No. 5 TCU Beach Volleyball (9-0) delivered a performance for the record books on the final day of the Horned Frog Challenge, earning the biggest win in program-history over No. 3 Florida State (3-2). TCU won three matches today, over No. 19 Georgia State (4-1), No. 3 Florida State (3-2) and Central Arkansas (5-0) to finish the weekend, 5-0, with four ranked wins and the program's first-ever Top 5 victory.

"This was an insane weekend," head coach Hector Gutierrez said. "Everyone that was here played at a high level of volleyball. Our girls did a tremendous job managing how the opponents pushed us. We knew that we needed to play our best to beat everyone here. We played really aggressive and we showed that we were the better team this weekend. And that's not a coincidence, we have been practicing really well and working really hard. We're 9-0 this season, we need to keep going and keep grinding and keep believing that we can beat anybody. I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us this weekend, the alumni, staff, students and families. There's no way we could have accomplished what we did today without them. I'm really thankful that they came out and supported us. We'll need them for the rest of the season."

The victories today improve the greatest start to a TCU season to 9-0. The Frogs won all five home matches this weekend, extending its home winning streak to 20 matches, dating back to the 2020 season (March 6, 2020).

TCU defeated four more ranked opponents this weekend: No. 19 Georgia State (4-1), No. 18 South Carolina (4-1), No. 16 Stetson (5-0) and No. 3 Florida State (3-2). The Horned Frogs are 6-0 against ranked opponents this season, the longest streak in program history. TCU beat all four ranked opponents this weekend in consecutive matches, marking the most consecutive wins over ranked opponents ever achieved by TCU.

The Frogs depth was the difference maker all weekend. TCU posted a perfect 15-0 record from the No. 5, No. 4 and No. 3 pairings across the five matches. Alexis Filippone and Hailey Hamlett (4-0), Maria Gonzalez and Ana Vergara (4-0), and Megan Muret and Rochelle Scott (4-0) all delivered 4-0 weekends with Muret and Hamlett finishing with five wins each.

The Horned Frogs used the same lineup for the matches against No. 19 GSU and No. 3 FSU before using four new pairings (Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno stayed at No. 1) to defeat UCA, 5-0, the third sweep of the season.

The pairing of Muret/Scott won all four of their matches in straight sets this weekend. The duo has not dropped a set all season (14-0), posting a 7-0 record. Muret, herself, leads TCU with a 9-0 record in her matches this year. The senior transfer from UCLA has won all 18 of her sets this season, winning both of her matches with Tara Patton in straight sets.

Hamlett won all five of her matches this weekend, playing four matches with Filippone at No. 3, before teaming up with Hailey Brockett to earn her first career win at No. 2, against UCA. Hamlett is 8-1 in her first season of college competition. The New Braunfels, Texas native clinched the match against No. 3 Florida State, with Filippone, winning in three sets: 19-21, 21-17, 15-8.

QUICK HITS

Muret and Scott scored the first point for the Horned Frogs, winning in two sets at the No. 5 position: 21-18, 21-8.
Gonzalez and Vergara won the next match in three sets at the No. 4 position: 25-23, 16-21, 15-10.
Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno clinched the match for the Frogs at No 1: 21-12, 21-17.
Alexis Filippone and Hailey Hamlett scored the final point of the match in a three-set victory at the No. 3 position: 21-18, 19-21, 15-10.
TCU improved its lead in the all-time series with GSU to 6-3.
The Horned Frogs have won their last three meetings against the Panthers, dating back to 2020 and are 2-0 against them in Fort Worth.

QUICK HITS AGAINST No. 3 Florida State:

TCU won the first two completed matches from the No. 5 and No. 4 pairings to take a 2-0 lead just as the top three pairings were taking the court.
Muret and Scott got the ball rolling, again, posting a 22-20, 21-17 win at No. 5
Gonzalez and Vergara followed with a three-set win, 21-19, 17-21, 17-15, their fourth three-set victory together (4-0).
FSU tied the score, 2-2, as Filipone/Hamlett entered their third set.
The TCU 3s dominated their third set, winning 15-8, to secure the victory.
It was the first time TCU won a match, 3-2, using No. 3-5 since March 30, 2019 (vs. No. 10 Stetson).
This was the first victory for TCU over Florida State in program history.
TCU is now 2-0 in 3-2 matches this year.

QUICK HITS AGAINST Central Arkansas

TCU used four new pairings to defeat UCA, 5-0, securing its third sweep of the season.
Trinity Cavanaugh and Hayley Boll won the first point at No. 3.
It was Cavanaugh's season debut. She moves to 1-0 this year while Boll improves to 2-0.
Peyton Yamagata and Josie Sek combined for the second win at No. 5.
This was Sek's TCU debut (1-0) and Yamagata's third start (3-0).
Muret and Patton clinched the dual with a win at No. 4.
This was their second match together and their second straight sets win.
Brockett and Hamlett won the fourth point in their first match paired together.
It was Hamlett's first career victory at No. 2 after posting a 7-1 record for the Frogs, playing No. 3.
Alvarez and Moreno finished off the sweep with the most dominant win of the year, 21-11, 21-9, at No. 1.
The 22-point differential is the highest of any TCU pairing this season.
They improve to 34-10 together as a college pairing.

UP NEXT
The Horned Frogs travel to Manoa, Hawaii, March 10-12. TCU will face off against four teams, two ranked in the top ten, Nebraska, No. 10 California, UC Davis and No. 9 Hawaii.
