FROG FOCUS
The Horned Frogs begin their Big 12 regular season championship defense this weekend after one of the most successful non-conference seasons in program history. TCU won 17 matches, the most since the 2016 season, earned a No. 1 ranking twice, after never doing so before, and secured the program's first team national championship at the ITA Team Indoor Championships, in Seattle, Washington.
Sander Jong is in tremendous form at the moment. The junior from Amsterdam has won his last five singles matches to bring his season record to a team-best 14-4. He has been at his best when the moment is biggest, winning his last three tiebreakers, including a 10-3 super set against Baylor's No. 31 Sven Lah, last Friday. He boasts a combined record of 26-6 this season, the most wins on the team and just one shy of tying his career high, set his freshman season (2019).
In doubles play, the No. 1 pairing of Luc Fomba and Jake Fearnley have proven themselves to be one of the toughest outs in the country. Ranked No. 2 in the nation, Fomba and Fearnley easily dispatched of both of their opponents last weekend, taking down No. 30 Bass/Lah (Baylor) 6-2 before powering past Tulane's No. 1 pair, 6-3. They have won five matches in a row and eight of their last nine, dating back to the indoor national championship tournament in February. They are 6-0 against ranked opponents this season, including a 6-4 victory over the No. 1 ranked doubles team of Robert Cash and Matej Vocel, from Ohio State, last month.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Texas Tech comes to Fort Worth for the first meeting between the two schools since TCU clinched a share of the Big 12 regular season championship in Lubbock last season. The Red Raiders are 12-7 this season and 1-3 in true road matches, after falling to Middle Tennessee, 4-3, on the road last Friday.
The Horned Frogs lead the all-time series, 40-6, including a 22-2 mark on the purple courts. TCU has won the last seven matches in this series and has not been beaten by Texas Tech at home, since 2012.
The Sunday match comes against No. 4 Baylor (18-2) just nine days after the Bears defeated TCU, 5-2, in Fort Worth. TCU got off to a slow start in that match, dropping all six opening sets in singles play for its third loss of the season. As a result, Baylor jumped five spots in the ITA Rankings, moving up to No. 4, while TCU fell two spots to No. 3.
This will be the 61st all-time meeting between TCU and Baylor. BU has won the last four meetings to cut TCU's lead in the all-time series to 35-25. TCU is 3-5 against Baylor in Big 12 regular season matches and is looking for its first win in Waco since last season's 4-1 victory, indoors, in non-conference action.
