TCU records sixth straight home victory
FORT WORTH -- TCU women's tennis (6-1) stayed perfect on the purple courts with a 4-2 victory over North Texas on Monday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU won the doubles point and three singles matches, capped off by a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles, won by Mercedes Aristegui.
TCU won the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 3. UNT recorded the first win of doubles action before Aleksa Cveticanin and Stevie Kennedy tied things up with a 6-4 victory at No. 1. Just a few moments later, the No. 3 pairing of Addy Guevara and Isabel Pascual combined for a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Horned Frogs for the sixth time this season.
In singles play, Cveticanin made quick work of her opponent at No. 4, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory for TCU, putting the Frogs in front, 2-0. It was the most dominant win of the season for Cveticanin who improves to 3-1 in singles matches and 7-3 overall.
After UNT recorded a pair of points to make the dual score, 2-2, Jade Otway polished off a straight-set victory at No. 5 (6-3, 6-3) to put the Frogs back in front, 3-2. Otway remains in tremendous form for TCU in her freshman campaign. She improves to 5-0 in singles play and 8-2 overall as a Horned Frog.
Otway's win came as Aristegui and Pascual were still playing in their second sets, both down a set. With momentum in danger of falling out of TCU's hands, both Spaniards won their second sets, setting up a pair of three-set matches to decide the dual.
In the third, Aristegui got a quick break to go in front, 3-2. Aristegui raised her level with the match on the line, winning long points against tough opposition and eventually winning her third set, 6-3, to clinch the match for TCU. Pascual had also earned a break in her match at No. 6, leading her third set 4-2, when play was halted.
