Frogs Comeback, Edge UAPB in Season Opener
11/7/2022 10:35:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Miller led the Frogs with 19 points
FORT WORTH – Down the majority of the game, Mike Miles Jr. drained a 3-pointer at the top of the key to take the lead that No. 14 TCU held onto in a 73-72 win over Arkansas - Pine Bluff in the men's basketball season opener Monday night at Schollmaier Arena.
After a barrage of 3-pointers by the Golden Lions (0-1), it was Miles' three that ultimately won the game. UAPB made 12-of-27 from beyond-the-arc and led by as many as 20 points. It matched TCU's largest comeback in the Jamie Dixon era, which happened against Texas last season in the Big 12 Championship.
Emanuel Miller led the Horned Frogs (1-0) with 19 points, 15 coming in the second half, when TCU outscored UAPB 38-26.
Behind a 20-2 run, the Golden Lions got out to a 29-9 lead with 10:10 left to play in the first half. UAPB hit eight of its first 11 from 3-point range. The Golden Lions eventually made 11 of their first 17 attempts from three. UAPB took a 46-35 at the half after shooting 51.6 percent from the field.
Miller set the tone for a comeback at the start of the second half with a 3-pointer. Minutes later, TCU went on an 11-0 run that saw TCU lead 54-50. Included in the run was Eddie Lampkin's first bucket of the game, a layup to give TCU its first lead since the Frogs' opening basket of the contest.
Neither team led by more than four points in the final eight minutes.
With 51 seconds left and the Frogs trailing by two, Miles made the three to set the Frogs ahead 71-70.
Chuck O'Bannon was fouled twice in the remaining seconds of the game and was 2-for-4 from the line. UAPB had one final chance to win the game but a 10-foot baseline shot by Trejon Ware was just off.
The Horned Frogs will continue home play in Schollmaier Arena on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. against Lamar. The game will be seen on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
