
TCU Takes Top Spot At WVU Classic

Johannessen finishes first individually in air rifle
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The No. 3 ranked TCU women's rifle team finished atop the leaderboard after firing a 4,737 team score at the WVU Classic featuring four of the top six teams in the country. Individually, Julie Johannessen outlasted the competition in the air rifle final to take home first place in the discipline.
TCU held a six-point cushion after smallbore and needed it as No. 6 West Virginia fired a match-best 2,382 in air rifle on Sunday. The Horned Frogs finished second in the discipline with a team score of 2,380.
Overall, TCU topped West Virginia by four shots as the Mountaineers closed the match with a team score of 4,733. No. 2 Alaska finished third with a 4,725 and No. 1 Kentucky was last after shooting a 4,705.
Individually, three Horned Frogs earned a spot in the air rifle final. Johannessen again took home top spot as she outlasted Alaska's Rylan Kissell. She fired a final score of 417.6 to top Kissell by 3.9 points. Stephanie Grundsoee fired a finals total of 206.9 to finish fifth, while Katie Zaun shot a 206.2 to finish sixth.
TCU got off to a hot start in the first relay with all three counters firing a 594 or better. Grundsoee led all shooters with a 599. Johannessen fired a 596 and Zaun a 594. Hemphill's 591 in relay 2 locked up the win for the Horned Frogs. Also serving as a counter was Anne White, who shot a 584.
Shooting in the match, but not factoring in the team score were Stephanie Allan (586), Mikole Hogan (588) and Nina Schuett (585).
For the match, TCU boasted three of the top seven shooters overall. Grundsoee led all competitors with an aggregate of 1,190. Johannessen finished third with an aggregate of 1,187, while Zaun sat seventh with an 1,183.
The Horned Frogs will open the home portion of its schedule on Nov. 12 as it hosts UTEP for a pair of matches Saturday and Sunday.
