Horned Frogs defense limits Dukes to just 137 yards of total defense
FORT WORTH - TCU had touchdown drives on its opening three possessions and its defense was dominant in a 45-3 season-opening victory over Duquesne Saturday night in Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The Horned Frogs (1-0), receiving votes in both major polls, limited the Dukes to just six first downs and 137 yards of total offense, the fewest by a TCU opponent since Sept. 28, 2019, when Kansas was held to 159.
TCU improved to 119-5 under Head Coach Gary Patterson when allowing 17 points or less.
The Horned Frogs are now 16-5 in season openers and 19-2 in home debuts in the Patterson era.
TCU built a 35-0 halftime lead. By agreement of both head coaches, the second half was shortened to 12-minute quarters.
Keyed by a 10-yard completion from Max Duggan to Quentin Johnston on a 4th-and-5 at the Duquesne 30, TCU took a 7-0 lead on the game's opening possession. Duggan, who played just the first half, capped the 13-play, 90-yard drive with an 8-yard keeper into the end zone.
The Horned Frogs then went 60 yards in just four plays on their next series to extend the lead to 14-0 as Emari Demercado scored on a 2-yard run for his first collegiate touchdown.
An interception by Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson on the Dukes' ensuing possession led to a Zach Evans' 2-yard scoring run and a 21-0 lead with 1:28 left in the first quarter. Dating back to last season, Evans has a rushing touchdown in each of his last three games.
Kendre Miller's 5-yard touchdown run made it 28-0, and a 6-yard pass from Duggan to J.D. Spielman in the final minute of the first half made it a 35-0 game at the break.
TCU's final score came on a 20-yard pass from Chandler Morris to Blake Nowell.
