TCU – CAL POSTGAME NOTES
TCU 34, Cal 32
Sept. 11, 2021
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the game:
"We'll take it. It's hard to be 2-0. I thought offensively we started slow. I thought Max did a really good job, but moral of the story is - don't rush the deep ball. The defense, they'll grow, and they'll get better."
On getting beat on the deep ball:
"I've been telling them they've been going too slow in practice. Maybe now they'll listen. They are going to get better, and we know how good they can play but they didn't play like that today."
On Zach Evans:
"He must be a terrible back. I've been waiting all summer to say that. I've watched these rankings coming out on social media and they have him ranked fifth or sixth and I'm just like, really? But let them keep talking like that, we'll just keep running him."
On the offense:
"It's an older offense. They started slow today, the thing I liked best is when they needed to get it done, they did. This will give them a lot of confidence going into the next two weeks and so on."
TCU Sophomore Wide Receiver Quentin Johnston
On 45-yard touchdown:
"It was all a spur of the moment. We needed a big play, and I was there to make it. I just needed my O-Line to play hard and they came through."
On Evans's TD:
"That was huge. I knew he was good, but he really showed something right there. That was a game changing moment going into the second quarter. We really needed that."
On work ethic:
"Coming off a big year last year, I felt like I needed to be more of a leader. I needed to lead by example. I am only a sophomore, but I wanted the freshman to see the work ethic that I have and hope that it can motivate them."
TCU Sophomore Running Back Zach Evans
On how it to score before halftime:
"I feel like was tremendous. We were down two touchdowns and they had just scored. We scored right before halftime, and it was needed."
On flying under the radar:
"Me personally, I don't pay attention to it. Since I got here, I stopped thinking about it. It's all about the team now"
On RB chemistry:
The chemistry is great. There are no set starters, we just rotate. It is all about what you do outside of football. We are always with each other, hanging out together. We just always stay together and stay strong."
TCU Junior Quarterback Max Duggan
On correcting his downfield throws in the future:
"Just more in practice. Getting a feel for them and seeing coverages. I just need to put them out there and let the playmakers make the plays."
On priorities going into future games:
"We need to get some guys back. Just get healthy and get back into it and stay prepared. SMU two years ago, that was a bite. We want that game back, and we're looking forward to it."
On becoming more comfortable with Blair:
"Blair is such a smart, athletic kid. He understands what I'm looking for. The good thing about Blair is that you know where he's going to be and that he'll be in the right spot. You can always rely on him."

Cal head coach Justin Wilcox
On special teams:
"As soon as you lose a PAT, you're chasing a point now. Throughout the rest of a game, you're chasing that point somehow, someway and it showed up all the way in the first quarter and we all know that. It's frustrating. We have the ability to make that play. I think today it was a poor snap and we have to find a way to get the ball on the ground and kick is through on a PAT. That's something we should expect from ourselves. It does impact the rest of the game as we all saw."
On the passing game changing from week one:
"We knew we'd have to be aggressive and take some shots down the field. We knew we'd have to complete some of those shots. They play a style of defense were there's a lot of guys nine or 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. We knew we had to do that. We took a step forward in the passing game. Unfortunately, we still had some chances out there to convert third downs and keep the chains moving and didn't quite get it done. Ultimately, it's my responsibility to make sure the team's prepared to play well and I've got to do a better job.
On TCU's rushing attack:
"They're good. They've got some good players and we started to bleed in the inside run game. We played some odd front. We played some even front. They ran some speed options so they attacked you with numbers once they involve the quarterback. Once they even out the numbers in the run game, then they stress your coverage and unfortunately, we got beat a couple times there in coverage and in man-to-man situations. Another thing that sticks out to me is the yards after contact. If we watch the tape, it's not going to be good. Yards after contact in the run game is something that we'll have to improve on."
On if the heat impacted the team in the second half:
"I guess it doesn't even matter. Yeah, it's hot out there. It's hot out there for everybody. We want to roll players. We knew it was going to be hot. There's nothing we can do about that other than prepare during the week and hydrate and know it's going to get hot and be tough, but I'm sure it was hot for the other team too."
Cal Quarterback Chase Garbers
On the success of throwing the ball down field:
We knew we were going to get better as the week went on. Our goal is to get better each and every week and I think we did that today, compared to last week. Watching the tape, we saw there were some vulnerable spots deep down the field over the middle with this defense and we decided to take those shots. I think that was huge for our success today. We didn't get the win, but I think we took a lot of strides as an offense and as a team.
Cal Linebacker Cameron Goode
On Cal's defense throughout the game:
I don't think anyone was worn down. We were all fighting and we all knew it was coming down to the last drive, we all gave it all we had. They made some plays, and that was the result.
On the mindset of the locker room:
I'm seeing a lot of guys that are really hungry. 0-2 is a bad start and we have to get it going. I feel like we improved since the first week, but we just have to keep improving and making more plays.
Cal Safety Daniel Scott
On his pick-6:
I'm a flat defender on that play and I'm just trying to read the quarterback … It's making a play. I remember that once I caught it, everyone was pretty quiet, so that was a good feeling. We make those plays in practice all of the time, so I was expecting it.
Cal Wide Receiver Trevon Clark
On Cal's strategy:
We knew we could run past them and that was part of the game plan. We executed what we practiced the entire week … I don't really like to reflect on past weeks, but this is something that we can do every week and I think it's something that can be a major part of our offense game in and game out.
