TCU Splits Matches to Open CCSA Championships

The Horned Frogs defeated College of Charleston before falling to No. 3 LSU

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. -- No. 7 TCU beach volleyball (24-7) battled past the College of Charleston, 3-2, in the first round before coming up just short, 3-2, against No. 3 LSU in the second round of the CCSA Championships in Huntsville, Ala.

Two Horned Frog pairings went unbeaten over the day: Olivia Blackburn/Hailey Brockett and Maria Gonzalez/Rochelle Scott. Blackburn/Brockett have now taken over the team-lead in total wins, with a program-best 26.

Blackburn and Brockett were the heroes against Charleston. As the last match on the courts, the TCU twos managed to overcome an opening set loss to defeat their opponents, 15-7, in the third set and secure the third CCSA tournament victory in program history.

In the second match, the Horned Frogs gave LSU all it could handle, before falling in the only three-set match to drop into the elimination bracket.

TCU still has a chance at the conference title. The Horned Frogs will need to defeat Tulane tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. to advance to the next round where they will face either the College of Charleston or South Carolina for a spot in the Aqua Bracket semifinals.

Quick Hits vs. College of Charleston:

Alvarez and Moreno scored the first point for the Horned Frogs in two smashing sets: 21-9, 21-7.
The Spanish Phenoms clinched their 25th victory as a pair with their win over the Cougars.
13 points is the largest margin of victory they have ever experienced as a No. 1 pairing.
Scott and Gonzalez scored the second point for TCU winning in two dominating sets: 21-15, 21-13.
The No. 3 pairing extends their record to 21-5 on the season.
Blackburn and Brockett put a stop to the Cougars by clinching the Frog victory in three sets at the No. 2 position: 18-21, 2-17, 15-7.
The duo received their 25th victory as a pair with their win over College of Charleston.
They are 6-2 in three set matches.

Quick Hits vs. LSU:

Blackburn and Brockett put the Frogs out in front with a dominating 21-14, 21-13 result at No. 2.
This is the most lopsided victory over a ranked opponent for Blackburn/Brockett, tied with their win over the No. 2 pair from No. 16 Stetson earlier this season.
They are now 26-3 together this season, the greatest record of any Horned Frog pairing in program history.
This was their team-leading 10th undefeated day when playing multiple matches together.
Gonzalez and Scott tied the dual at 2-2 with a straight set victory on three.
They improve to 22-5 on the season.
They won the opening set in extra points, 23-21. They are now 7-1 when the set goes into extra points.
This was their ninth undefeated day when playing multiple matches together.
