TCU swept top three singles matches in 4-3 loss
WACO, Texas – No. 48 TCU women's tennis (5-5, 0-1) claimed points at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles in a 4-3 loss to No. 15 Baylor (11-1) on Thursday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Mercedes Aristegui collected her first win of the year at No. 1 singles, extending her career-best win streak to nine matches.
"It was a great match," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "Isabel and Mercedes are proving they belong in the No. 1 spot in doubles. They're communicating well and adjusting well. I love their attitude. Getting wins at one, two and three, in singles today was phenomenal. I thought Mercedes did. Great job of being mentally tough. She played that opponent twice in the fall and showed that she learned from those matches to do an amazing job today. It was so encouraging to see Stevie elevate her game today. She was facing a really good opponent and kept matching her intensity to get a huge win. Marie turned her match around after the team match was clinched. That mental toughness was big time for us. Great to see her get back in the win column. There's good things coming for this team. I'm proud of our effort today. We'll be back home Saturday, ready to play."
Baylor took the doubles point on courts two and three. However, the No. 1 pairing of Aristegui/Pascual Montalvo had just broken back to tie the score, 4-4, when play was halted. They remain 1-1 against Power 5 doubles opponents this season, with three unfinished matches. They were either leading or on-serve, in all three suspended contests.
