Morris throws for 461 yards in his first career start
FORT WORTH – Chandler Morris, in his first career start, passed for 461 yards and Shadrach Banks had a game-saving interception to lead TCU to a 30-28 victory over Baylor in a thriller Saturday afternoon at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The Horned Frogs beat the Bears for the sixth time in the last seven seasons and are 7-3 against them in Big 12 play.
Trailing 30-28, Baylor took possession at its 20 with 1:56 remaining. Three plays later, the Bears were at the TCU 34. Banks then recorded the first interception of his career to preserve the Horned Frogs' win.
The 461 yards by Morris, who completed 29-of-41 attempts for two touchdowns and no interceptions, ranked fourth for a single game in TCU history. It was the Horned Frogs' first 400-yard passing game since Kenny Hill, position coach for Morris, against Oklahoma in 2016.
Morris added 70 yards rushing on 11 carries to give him 531 yards of total offense, second-most in TCU history.
Leading 23-21, TCU extended the margin to 30-21 with 11:59 to play on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Morris to a wide-open Quentin Johnston in the end zone. Johnston had five receptions for 152 yards for his third 100-yard game in the last four contests.
Morris scored his first touchdown as a Horned Frog on a 12-yard keeper to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:59 left in the first quarter.
Three Griffin Kell field goals, from 30, 46 and 24 yards, were key in TCU taking a 16-14 halftime lead. Kell's final make, the 24-yard effort, came with 59 seconds left in the first half to give the Horned Frogs their advantage at the break. Kell's field goals gave him 11 consecutive made attempts, tied for the eighth-longest streak in TCU history.
On its first possession of the second half, TCU drove 83 yards in 12 plays covering 6:16 on the clock to extend its lead to 23-14 on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Morris to Dominic DiNunzio. It was the first career touchdown for DiNunzio who attends TCU on an ROTC scholarship.
TCU totaled 562 yards of offense while its defense came up with big plays throughout the contest. Kee'yon Stewart, in his first game of the season, had an interception in the end zone off a deflection by Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson.
