TCU – BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
TCU 20, BAYLOR 18
Nov. 6, 2021
TCU Interim Head Coach Jerry Kill
Opening statement:
"I'm old and I've been through a lot of ball games, and I don't know if I've ever seen a team with a more deserving group of kids having to go through what they did. There's a lot of things behind the scenes you all don't see - injuries and one running back left. When Coach [Patterson] said go to practice, we saw a lot of long faces on Sunday, but this week they worked their tails off. I have little to do with it and I credit the kids and the coaching staff and Gary Patterson. They built this program - I've only been here two years. I'm just the fill in guy. I'm just so proud of those kids and the tremendous effort, even on the sidelines, the TCU fans, and the coaches… It goes from the equipment room, to the training room, to the doctors helping us all. We took a tough situation and made it a better situation."
On Chandler Morris:
"He threw a lot of balls, didn't he? He did a pretty good job. He's a playmaker and he doesn't have the experience to run the offense but we knew he was talented. Until you put him in a game, you don't know how talented, so he played a pretty good football game."
On being down to one running back today:
"Let's credit Emari for coming in and some of the things he did in pass protection were unbelievable, like blocking number eight a lot. People don't always notice those things, but he did a tremendous job overall of giving us a chance to throw the ball. Again, just a tremendous group effort."
TCU Quarterback Chandler Morris
On the game
"That was huge, I don't know another team more deserving after everything we've been through this week. We were fighting for Coach P, we did this for him but we truly deserved this win."
On his receivers
"I think they did amazing; I stress to them that I'll put the ball in their vicinity and its their job to get up and make the play and they did an excellent job doing that today."
Confidence that this game gives the team
"It's huge, we truly deserved that win, we know we can compete with anyone in the country, and I feel like we've been defeating ourselves up to this point and this was a great statement win that we need to build off of."
TCU Wide Receiver Quentin Johnston
On Chandlers Day
"Unbelievable. He came in, he's been telling us all year that he was ready, so it was great to see him come in and exceed the expectations that I had of him."
On Coach Kelly
"He has a ton of confidence in us receivers and he told us if we think we're the best receivers in the country then we have to act like it at all times and we take that into the game and play hard."
On bouncing back from WVU game
"I had to keep that in the past, I tend to hold on to a lot of stuff but I couldn't in this case, so I put it in the past and kept looking forward."
TCU Cornerback Trevius Hodges-Tomlinson:
On the win:
"Throughout the week we were constantly speaking on overcoming adversity and that is what we came out and did today. It was a big win for us, we just got to keep rolling."
On the locker room after the game:
"We were energized. We were energized this whole week. You know coming into this game that was the biggest thing, having maximum energy and that was the word that we continuously spoke about going into this week and that's what we came out with today."
On Kee'yon Stewart and Shadrach Banks' interceptions:
"I was excited to see both of those plays by both of them. You know, Shad, that was a really great play by him and Kee'yon just being there, in the area, to be able to come up with the ball and that was a really big play for both sides of the ball, it kept us going. So, it was a big play that led us all to a win. So, I was excited about that.

Baylor Head Coach Dave Aranda
On the game:
"I'm disappointed in the outcome of this game. I'm proud of the effort of the team. I think to start the game with some positives and then adversity hit us. This was something going into the game that was really ID'd from the start of being on the road. Just the crowd. The unknowns. Not letting that get in the way and fighting through it. Much like we have at home. This was to be the next step. I think we were able to make some strides there. In the second half, our ability to negate some of the penalties. There was some chippyness to the game, so to not get pulled into that. I'm proud of the team and I told them that. There's a whole lot to improve on. All of it is correctable. I told the team that I take responsibility for all of it.
On the TCU quarterback Chandler Morris:
"I think he had a really good game. Similar to some of the things that have been happening against us going back to Texas State really and I think you can go throughout our season so far for examples. We talked about some of this after last week as well. These are things that, while we have improved some, clearly not enough. I think pass rush at times was severely lacking. The quarterback had a bunch of time to find an open receiver or scramble to move the chains. Those are things that are working against us and we have to improve.
On when he found out Morris would be the starting quarterback:
Going into this game, since Coach (Gary) Patterson isn't here, there's a chance that things could be wide open and no one is telling anybody to run the ball. So, they could just be throwing to throw and throw. Those are things that were talked about and planned out. Then running back wise, we didn't really who any of those were going to be. So having a plan for each was also a part of it. I think a lot of it comes down to execution. What a lot of it has been this season.
Baylor Linebacker Terrel Bernard
On Chandler Morris:
"Yeah. Um, we had prepared for you know, Duggan and Morris. We didn't know who was going to come out and play, but I mean, he was elusive. He made the right decisions. A lot of times he extended trials a few times late, you know, he did enough for them to win the ball game."
On Chandler Morris' elusiveness:
"I mean, we knew what type of quarterback he was. We watched tape on him but obviously different when you're out there and you know we just have to capitalize on opportunities. And I think that's the overall theme of the game. We missed a few things specifically. I ended up putting up points on the board, but it still cost us the game."
On TCU's offensive success on third down:
"Yeah, I think there was communication stuff that we didn't really. And then you know, the quarterback made plays. We'll get better."
On how he feels physically:
"Yeah, I'm good. I mean, it was a long game toward the end of the season. So that type of stuff happens, but I mean I'm good, everybody's good."
On the little things to clean up:
"I think defensively just communication. Everybody being on the same page, a hundred percent of the time. There was a couple of times a couple of different calls. We had to make some checks and everybody was there. I think we get that stuff."
On TCU's effort:
"Absolutely. We practiced all week. We studied, we have a great game plan and we knew that they were going to fight. They're going to scratch and claw and be the same TCU team that we always see. I don't think that has changed in front of us.
Baylor Running Back Abram Smith
On the game:
"Throughout the whole game we had each other's back there was not a time in the game where we thought we were out of it we just wanted to keep fighting for it, but when it got that close the fight got just a little harder, so I guess in the sense of urgency we wanted to pull it out for each other."
On losing:
"It's really disappointing the defense gave us the ball back and we felt like it was a good opportunity to go and score, everybody's ready to get going just for that to happen, it's really disappointing. You are looking at the guy on your left and your right, and you are fighting for each other, and so for us to fall that short, it is disappointing."
On TCU this week:
"I felt like they had something to prove, it was what we were expecting, we were expecting a fight considering what they were going through. We wanted to be in the fight, we knew they were going to come out swinging, so we came out swinging as well. This is exactly what we thought we were going to feel."
On struggling to move the ball:
"I think it was maybe our execution. Whenever the drives started to get long for their offense, I guess you could say we got a little cold momentum was on their side, so I think execution wise we needed to execute a little bit more. We need to get the pace up and that was something we didn't do at the beginning."
