Eight Horned Frog aces not enough to take down Texas
AUSTIN – TCU Volleyball made eight service aces in a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Texas on Thursday night inside Gregory Gymnasium. Cecily Bramschreiber made four aces, the most by any Horned Frog against Texas in program history, as TCU came up short, in Austin.
"Once we settled in to the environment this evening our team battled, especially in the serving and passing game." head coach Jill Kramer said. "Overall, we had one of our best serving and passing performances of the season against a very tough serving Texas team. We created a lot of opportunities in transition that we did not take advantage of and are looking forward to playing a cleaner game tomorrow."
TCU NOTABLES:
Set 1 (UT, 25-21): Texas jumped out to a 10-2 lead due to a string of tough serves. The Horned Frogs fought to try and stop the bleeding but Texas managed to grow the lead to 22-10. TCU battled back late in the first, going on an 8-0 run thanks to three aces from Bramschreiber and a strong stretch of play from Manyang (one kill and two blocks). TCU split the next three points, putting an end to the comeback. By the end of the set, TCU won 11 of the final 14 points played but a tough start gave Texas a one-set advantage. Raiola led the Frogs with four kills on .375 hitting. Nichols posted nine assists and six digs while Cole and Manyang led the blocking effort, with two each.
Set 2 (UT, 25-20): The Horned Frogs played well in the second set but couldn't find the timely terminations when they needed it. TCU's receiving game was on point, not allowing an ace on any of Texas' 20 serves thanks to Raiola and Dennison's efforts on the back row. TCU kept it close until a 3-0 Longhorn run put UT in front, 15-10. From there, TCU couldn't close the gap to less than four and Texas finished the set with a five-point win. Dennison and Raiola finished with three digs each while going a combined 15-15 receiving serves. Nichols made nine assists while leading the team in digs for the second set in a row, with four.
Set 3 (UT, 25-19): TCU played its best volleyball of the night in the beginning of the third set, keeping Texas off balanced from the service line and hustling for loose balls on the defensive end. TCU had its latest lead of the day at 12-11 and kept the score close, 16-16, until a 4-0 Texas run salted away the set. Texas' block proved to be the difference in the final stages of play as Texas stayed perfect on the season (14-0, 5-0).
UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs (7-8, 1-4) get a second shot at Texas tomorrow night, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. inside Gregory Gymnasium. The match will be broadcasted on Longhorn Network.
