Yummy Morris with her second 20-point effort of the season
FORT WORTH - The TCU Horned Frogs (3-1, 0-1) secured another non-conference home victory on Wednesday, defeating the Lamar Cardinals (1-5, 0-0) at Schollmaier Arena, 79-53.
Yummy Morris led the Frogs with 20 points, shooting 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from the field along with four rebounds. Lauren Heard followed with 16 points, shooting 5-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the field and notching her eighth consecutive game with at least 15 points. Michelle Berry pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds in the victory.
The Frogs shot .419 (13-31) from the field in the first half and poured in a .692 (18-26) effort in the second half. TCU's defense limited the Cardinals to just .261 (18-62) from the field and forced 10 turnovers. The Frogs outrebounded Lamar, 48 to 33.
TCU continued to heat up throughout the course of the game, as the team increased its field goal percentage in each quarter. The Frogs finished the day shooting a blistering 76.9% from the field in the fourth quarter to close out the Cardinals.
TURNING POINT
Defense led to offense for a TCU team that found themselves trailing by two points in the first half. With 7:45 left in the second quarter, the Frogs launched a 14-0 run, led by Morris, who kicked off the scoring surge with six straight points. During that stretch, TCU forced turnovers in three consecutive offensive possessions by Lamar, with Morris and Heard both drawing charges, along with a steal forced by Aahliyah Jackson. The Horned Frogs held the Cardinals scoreless for nearly five minutes, as they jumped out to a comfortable 12-point lead in just a matter of minutes.
TCU scored eight of its 18 second quarter points off turnovers that were forced by the defense. Morris poured in eight of her game-high 20 points over a five-minute stretch in the second quarter to give the Frogs a lead going into the halftime break.
