TCU earns four Player of the Year accolades
FORT WORTH – A school-record seven TCU Horned Frogs were honored by league coaches on the Big 12 All-Conference squad. The Frogs took home four of the five Player of the Year awards. Grace Collins was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year. Emily Alvarado was tabbed as the Goalkeeper of the Year. Marz Akins was voted the Freshman of the Year. Head coach Eric Bell took home Coach of the Year honors.
Four Frogs were named first-team all-conference. Joining Collins and Alvarado on the first team were junior defender Brandi Peterson and senior forward Yazmeen Ryan. Messiah Bright was TCU's lone honoree on the second team. Akins and Olivia Hasler were named to the Big 12 All-Freshman squad.
Collins is the first Horned Frog to collect Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors. The sophomore ranked in the top-25 in seven statistical categories. She was second in the league with a career-high five goals, including three game-winning goals. She added two assists for a total of 12 points on the year. She was twice named Big 12 Player of the Week (Oct. 27, Nov. 10) in addition to earning National Player of the Week (Oct. 27) honors once.
Alvarado earned the league's first Goalkeeper of the Year award after finishing the year with an 8-0-1 mark. Her .925 save percentage leads the nation among goalkeepers with at least two games played, while her .324 goals against ranks second and her seven shutouts are tied for third nationally. During the season, she became the TCU record holder in career shutouts (20). She was named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week and National Player of the Week on Sept. 22.
Akins is the second TCU student-athlete to earn Freshman of the Year, joining Messiah Bright who won the award in 2018. The San Diego native started in eight matches during TCU's conference title run and was part of a Horned Frog defense that gave up just three goals and resulted in six shutouts. She was named Freshman of the Week on Sept. 14.
Bell led the Horned Frogs to their first Big 12 regular-season championship with an 8-0-1 record. TCU was the first team since 2016 to complete the regular-season slate undefeated. The honor is the first of Bell's career.
Ryan becomes TCU's first-ever four-time all-conference performer. She is a three-time first-team honoree. She played in and started seven games on the year. Two of her three goals scored on the year were game-winners.
Peterson, a two-time Big 12 Defender of the Week (Oct. 12, Nov. 10) and National Player of the Week (Oct. 12) recipient, makes her first appearance on an all-conference squad. She was the lone Horned Frog to play every minute of the season and was instrumental in TCU's seven shutouts. She contributed one game-winning goal and registered an assist on the season.
Bright is now a three-time all-conference performer. She played in and started five games this season, contributing one game-winning goal.
Hasler played in all nine games making two starts. She scored one goal on the year while playing 497 minutes on the season.
TCU ended the fall season ranked No. 3 nationally.
