TCU's late comeback falls short
FORT WORTH - In a defensive struggle, Kansas State held off a late TCU charge for a 21-14 victory Saturday afternoon in Amon G. Carter Stadium.
The Wildcats (3-1, 3-0) won their third straight game.
TCU held K-State to just one offensive touchdown and only 289 yards of offense with 80 coming on one play. The Wildcats were limited to 70 yards in the second half.
Trailing 21-7, TCU drove 77 yards in 11 plays with Max Duggan racing into the end zone to score from 3 yards out on 4th-and-goal. His dive into the end zone cut the deficit to 21-14 with 3:39 remaining.
The Horned Frogs (1-2, 1-2) regained possession at their 4 with just 1:05 left and drove to the K-State 39. With no time on the clock after a Wildcat penalty, TCU's last chance to even the game was thwarted when Duggan's Hail Mary into the end zone was batted down.
After K-State took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard Blake Lynch field goal on its opening series, TCU answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Darwin Barlow 7-yard scoring run for a 7-3 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Barlow, making his first career start, had a career high and team-best 56 yards rushing on eight carries.
K-State closed to within 7-6 on a Lynch 53-yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats took a halftime lead they would not relinquish after a 6 play, 91-yard drive. A 45-yard completion from Will Howard to Deuce Vaughn put K-State at the TCU 38. Four plays later, Howard scored on a 4-yard run to give K-State a 12-7 lead with 3:27 left in the first half. A 2-point rush by Chabastin Taylor made it a 14-7 game.
