TCU – OKLAHOMA POSTGAME NOTES
OKLAHOMA 33, TCU 14
October 24, 2020
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the message to the team postgame:
"We are on to the next ballgame. Bottom line is we have to play better. We probably lost Noah (Daniels) and maybe Wes Harris for the year, now we've got to find out who we got, regroup, get better, and move on to Baylor."
On the TCU pass rush:
"We went to a 3-man rush because of the way they were throwing the post, we needed some help back there. That causes other problems because then I needed to blitz more to cause some pressure and that hurt us a couple of times. You've got to be able to get more than one sack when you're playing this game."
On TCU's energy and penalty issues:
"We had two big unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that probably cost us at least 10 points. We are not at a point where we can do those kinds of things. You have big plays, you can't have those brought back. If you look at the stats, we've just got to play better."
On the running back room:
"The problem is, when it is 2nd-and-10 you aren't going to be getting a lot of carries. The reality is you've got to get the football to a point where you can run effectively."
On the pooch kick:
"He was supposed to kick the ball over their heads to get it on the ground where we could out run them and get it. It wasn't supposed to be high, or a pooch kick, that's why I called the timeout. I told him exactly how to do it, I saw the way they were lined. Then it was 'okay, who can sprint to the ball that's laying on the ground,' because they had no one deep on that side of the field. He kicked it where they could catch it, that doesn't do us much good."
On the late timeouts:
"I could stop it twice, offensively we need some work. It was a chance to get Zach Evans in the game, got a chance to see him. We are not going to have a give up attitude here. That's not going to happen."
TCU Wide Receiver Taye Barber
On offensive struggles
"It is very frustrating, but I don't think there's nothing really to dwell on. I mean they played good. We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot and keep getting dumb penalties. We just got to clean that stuff up."
On mood in locker room and bounce back
"We just got to hate losing more than we like winning. I just feel like once that clicks in everybody's heads and everybody is on the same page and just wants to win regardless of what happened, then that's what will happen."
On momentum shift on Conwright's touchdown reverse
"It is very frustrating because I thought it was a catch, and I didn't see the ball move at all, but I feel like if they were calling it on the field a touchdown it would have stood., but I don't know it kind of killed everybody's spirit like just on that drive because we had a good drive going, we ended with a touchdown but it got reversed, so. We just got to move past it and keep our heads up.
On being a veteran player and younger player impact
"It feels great because I know just sometimes it feels rough for them because sometimes they can't get in a groove, so when they do get in a groove it feels good to watch them do what they can do, and I see them do it all the time, so it just feels good for them to watch them do it in a game."
TCU Safety Trevon Moehrig
On Noah Daniels injury
"It's heart breaking ya know. I went into the training room, saw him, heard what happened. It just breaks my heart, man, he's a good player, ya know, was having a hell of a season so far. It's just crazy, ya know, it's the next man up, that's what we tell the young guys, so that's what we got to do. But I know that he has the strength to come back, I know that he is going to preserve and push through and come back as quick as he can."
On defensive play and effort
"Ya, I was just about to say, ya know, you kind of hear it, ya know, the games we've lost it's just 85% to 90% of the time defense is playing really well, we're holding them, ya know what I'm saying, and then it's just those big plays, those four or five big plays, that we got to eliminate. And I think going into practice this next week, and then going forward, we just got to work on just stopping and eliminating big plays and I think that we would play a lot better."
On bounce back and moving forward
"I'd said you know we're close, ya know, these games are coming down pretty close. I'd just say we have we have to bounce back, ya know, pick our heads up, onto next week, practice, nobody's holding their heads down, we got to come into practice with the mindset we got to get better every day at every aspect of the game and that is what I'd probably tell them."

Oklahoma Head Coach Lincoln Riley
On the game:
"I'm really proud of all three sides. I thought the defense was very solid all day. We did a good job limiting the run game and the explosive plays with all the speed TCU has on the field. They do a lot of different things formationally to challenge it. I thought we did a good job of getting lined up. I thought the defensive line made a lot of outstanding plays. I'm certainly proud of our defense and those guys did a great job. Special teams once again with a couple big plays that really spurred us on again. It was another solid performance by the special teams unit. Offensively, some guys made a lot of explosive plays. I thought we did some really good things up front. We had some mixed bag opportunities with the skill guys. There were several that we made and a few that we didn't make. We still took a few more too many negative yardage plays so we have to continue to grow. We are getting better as a team. We are on the right trajectory and we have to do whatever we can to continue to push that."
On freshman wide receiver Marvin Mims:
"The thing he keeps doing is he keeps answering the bell. It seems like every time he gets an opportunity, he makes a play. He's a talented kid, but it goes back to his habits. He practices hard every day. He's a tough kid. He's done a really good job of learning our stuff. Then I see him making such big plays early on in his career, both offensively and in our return game, it's been a big thing for this team."
On junior running back T.J. Pledger:
"T.J.'s done a nice job. He's really made some good plays. I think he's just getting more in sync. It's been a while since he's played this kind of ball. He's been a feature guy and getting his opportunity with carries. He's just starting to settle in. He got off to a great start today."
On the growth of this team:
"I think we have a lot of good things inside of us. I was really proud with how we handled the bye week. Everything is a challenge right now. Everything. It's almost more of a challenge when you don't have a game and don't have all the stuff that surrounds a weekend. I'm just real proud of how we handled that. I think it's a team that wants to find out how good we can get. I sense that in the way we practice and the way we respond. When we coach these guys or ask them to do something, they've been really responsive. I'm excited where this team can go. This team senses it. We are not even scratching the surface of where this team can be, but we are getting closer. If we are doing that then by the end of this thing, we can be pretty decent. We just have to keep plugging away."
Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma Quarterback
On his success throwing the ball deep today:
"We had a lot of deep ball plays styled up in the playbook before this game. It was a weak part of their defense that we could attack and we did that well this game."
On how Oklahoma's run game is coming along:
"Our run game is definitely getting better. Our O-line has been doing really well. TJ Pledger has been playing really well. Seth as well. That 1-2 punch is lethal. As well as Marcus Mims, when he gets in he does a great job. We still got work to do, especially the quarterbacks. We're going to continue to work on that."
On all but two skill players being underclassmen:
"It's good to see guys that are in my class as underclassmen. Coming up with them at camps and going through the grind with them in the off season. It's good to see them getting some work in, especially with this new class as well, like Marvin and Seth. They're doing well."
Isaiah Thomas, Oklahoma Defensive Line
On how well the defense has progressed this season:
"It was really big for us because we lost Ronnie Perkins and Jalen Redma. The way we stepped up speaks highly of Coach Thibaboux and Coach Cain. We played on a fast and intense level. We were very productive these last few weeks. It speaks volumes of our D-line coaches and how we handle adversity this year and how well we've been producing. So, it's really fun to play with them and see how fast we're maturing out there."
On the depth of Oklahoma's roster right now:
"We have great depth. It feels good when you can go into a game with a 2 or 3 man rotation, but also at a consistent level of being productive - not just to get a break. It feels good knowing you got a couple guys behind you to step in and can also produce just as much. It's much needed especially with the tempo we get. So it's great to see how fast these younger players are maturing and how well we're being coached out there."
On the defense's several tackle-for-losses:
"For this week's game plan, we were really aggressive. As you can see how we played the game, defensively I hesitated on the first RPO that they had. I told myself from that point on that I would keep being aggressive from that point on. It was the game plan to be aggressive and fly around and have fun and don't think too much about your job. I know on that first play I was thinking too much, but our offense did do a joggodob job of being aggressive today."
TJ Pledger, Oklahoma Running Back
On the his confidence and mentality running the ball:
"My O-line has done a tremendous job. I never fail to give credit to them. They come out every Saturday doing their thing and I'm so thankful to have the O-line I do. They honestly make it easy for us receivers and running backs. Receivers blocked downfield and it showed today"
On where the Oklahoma run game is now:
"We're just progressing and understand we have a lot to work on. We're getting better every day and working hard on the practice field. Day by day, week by week, we take everything and the sky's the limit for us. We have yet to peak."
On his early touchdown this game:
"Establishing my presence and physicality early in the game definitely means a lot. My O-line did a great job clearing things up. I saw the hole and I hit it and I didn't blink."
Theo Wease, Oklahoma Wide Receiver
On Rattler's eagerness on throwing him the ball downfield:
"I think that just comes with playing with each other over time and getting that chemistry right. Putting work in before and after practice and just creating more opportunities for us."
On scoring early in the first half setting the tone on offense:
"Every offense wants to score the first drive. We went out there and that energy from that drive stuck with us for the rest of the game. It was a great feeling."
On the coach's message at halftime with a 17-7 lead:
"The message is the same every game. It's 0-0. Forget about what happened in the first half and just focus on each play 10 seconds at a time."
Brendan Radley-Hiles, Oklahoma Defensive Back
On where the Oklahoma defense is at right now
"Overall, I believe that we're consistent but we're building confidence within our consistency. I feel as if we do that every day in practice and Coach Grinch has a great emphasis that we follow and buy into."
The defensive success as a collective: today
"It starts in practice with the consistency we practice with. It's a high tempo practice and Coach Grinch creates a great atmosphere for us with the crowd noise simulated in practice, so we're able to do so in the game. I feel as if this defense took a great step today and we stayed strong through adverse situations, so I'm proud of us."
On the passion and energy he has for football when adversity hits:
"I write it down in my notebook every single day: confidence. You have to stay confident at all times because even in adverse situations, you don't want anything slipping through and your mind can drift off into 100 different places during those moments. But confidence is a key factor throughout a game regardless of what you're doing through."
