McCall earns unanimous preseason All-Big 12, Nalls named program’s first Big 12 preseason Freshman of the Year
FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU volleyball earned a pair of preseason honors as sophomore outside hitter élan McCall was named unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 team and freshman hitter Audrey Nalls earned Preseason Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday. Nalls becomes the first preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year in program history.
This is the latest in a long string of honors for McCall who is currently training in Anaheim with the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team. The 2018 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and All-Big 12 First Team selection is one of eight student-athletes to be unanimously voted into the Preseason All-Conference squad. She becomes the fourth Preseason All-Big 12 member in program history and the first to do so as an underclassman.
Nalls, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter comes to campus as a member of the 2018 Under Armour Girls High School All-America Second Team, and was ranked No. 20 on the PrepVolleyball.com's Senior Aces list. TCU fans will quickly become accustomed to her powerful hitting on the outside, as she finished her high school career with 2,044 kills and 4.61 kills per set. She is one of seven incoming freshmen that together have been ranked the No. 5 incoming freshman class in the nation by Volleyball Magazine.
The preseason team and awards are determined by league head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players.
"These awards are a great compliment to our team, specifically Audrey and élan from the coaches in our league," head coach Jill Kramer said. "However, this is a preseason poll and there is still plenty of work to be done. Coming off our foreign trip, our team has had a chance to learn a lot about each other, truly dive into our systems and connect. Now it's up to our student-athletes to put in time on the court and with our strength coach, Michael Wood, to make sure we're ready when August comes around."
TCU will begin its season on August 30 against High Point University as the opening match of the Cowtown Classic. Along with HPU, the Frogs welcome in Lipscomb and Villanova for a full weekend slate of matches.
