
Rybakov Advances at NCAA Singles Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – TCU senior men's tennis player Alex Rybakov opened individual postseason action in impressive style with a straight-set victory over No. 48 Andrew Fenty of Michigan to move on to the Round of 32 at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., on Monday.
The tournament's No. 3 seed, Rybakov cruised in his opening-round matchup, downing Fenty, 6-3, 6-2. The TCU senior raced out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but Fenty battled back to tie it at 3-3. Rybakov answered by winning the next seven points to clinch the first set and take a commanding 4-0 advantage in the second. He would close out the contest with ease from there to advance to the second round for the third time in his career.
Rybakov moves on to face No. 41 Alexander Bakshi of Oklahoma in the Round of 32 on Tuesday. Bakshi defeated No. 66 Jonas Ziverts from Arizona, 7-6, 6-4, in his first-round contest.
Junior and No. 28 Alastair Gray was also in action for the Horned Frogs on the opening day of the NCAA Singles Championship, but ultimately fell in straight sets to No. 60 Kyle Seelig of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-2.
The duo of Rybakov and Gray will team up on Tuesday as the doubles portion of the tournament begins. Ranked No. 15, they will square off against Mississippi State's No. 3-seeded team of Strahinja Rakic and Nuno Borges.
The No. 22-ranked TCU tandem of Bertus Kruger and Reese Stalder will also compete in the doubles championship against the No. 38-ranked pair of Brandon Laubser and Tad Maclean from Auburn.
