The Horned Frogs topped Oklahoma state, 4-1, to end the regular season.
STILLWATER, Okla. – The final weekend of regular season action brought another victory for the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team as the Horned Frogs were able to top No. 26 Oklahoma State, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
With the victory and a loss by Baylor, TCU (19-5, 3-2 Big 12) tied for second in the Big 12 Conference standings to mark the fifth straight season finishing in the top half of the league. Due to tiebreaker rules, the Frogs will earn the No. 3 seed in the 2019 Big 12 Tennis Championship next week and will open action on Friday in the quarterfinals.
While the Frogs finished the match on top, Oklahoma State (14-10, 1-4 Big 12) took its only point of the match in doubles as the Cowboys picked up late wins on courts two and three. The momentum shifted back to TCU in singles action as freshman Sander Jong continued his hot streak at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Senior and No. 110 Reese Stalder put the Frogs out front for the first time in the match as he grabbed a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court three. No. 4 Alex Rybakov picked up a straight-set win of his own at the top spot as the senior took down No. 76 Matej Vocel, 6-3, 6-1, to improve to 23-2 overall this season and 15-2 against ranked opponents. The final point would come from sophomore Bertus Kruger as he came back to defeat Mathieu Scaglia on court four, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Today was another very good road win against a good ranked opponent where we lose the doubles point and come back. For that, I'm very proud of our boy's resilience and the ability to move on. I felt we played well in doubles with the exception of some key moments on courts two and three. There was a very good performance on court one in singles from (Alex) Rybakov in beating a very good player at his home. We got quick points from Sander (Jong) and Reese (Stalder) to give us some good momentum that we needed after a disappointing doubles point. Also a remarkable job by Bertus to come back and clinch that match. I am very proud of his resilience and his awesome body language throughout the match and it paid off.
We finished tied for second in the conference and we will play Friday in Lawrence for the conference tournament. We will see if we can improve just a little between now and then and possibly make a run at the tourney. The fun starts now."
