TCU beat two opponents, including a conference foe, to close out the regular season.
FORT WORTH, Texas (April 12, 2019) – The No. 18 TCU beach volleyball team finished the regular season by getting identical 4-1 wins over conference foe UAB and Texas A&M Corpus Christi as well as celebrating Senior Day at the TCU Invitational on Friday at the TCU Beach Volleyball Courts in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Horned Frogs (14-13, 3-5 CCSA) opened their tournament by playing Islanders (9-13) for a third time this season. The teams split the first two matches, with Avery Arellano and Caroline White earning a dominant 21-5, 21-11 win over Kylie Kvam and Brooke Adkisson on court five. TCU went into the top pairs confident and proved it by winning all of the courts in straight sets to earn a 4-1 victory.
TCU's next match was against conference opponent UAB (14-14, 3-9). The Frogs started quickly and got victories on courts four and five. The Blazers were able to win on court one, but Molly Scheel and Taylor Bradley had already earned a victory on court two to decide the match. Jordan Westendorff and Victoria McDonald were forced to a third-set and the duo were able to pull it out with the support of a large crowd for Senior Day.
The Frogs closed out the tournament with a ranked matchup against No. 3 Florida State (23-5, 13-1). Avery Arellano and Hailey Brockett fought for a win in the first heat by beating Macy Jerger and Kate Privett, 21-16, 21-19 on court five. TCU fought valiantly in the top pairings, but the Frogs were unable to pick up the wins they needed. Jordan Westendorff and Claire Doyle forced a third-set on court three and the duo of Molly Scheel and Taylor Bradley made their match interesting towards the end, but neither were able to complete their comebacks.
Quotes from the Weekend
Head Coach Hector Gutierrez
"We had a tough loss against FSU but showed once again that we are improving every week. FSU is one of the best teams in country and the girls did a terrific job. Next time we need to be better at closing games so we can compete against the best. It's time to prepare for the conference tournament next week and so we can show everyone who we are."
