Bane leads the Frogs with 18.7 points per game
FORT WORTH – TCU senior guard Desmond Bane was named to the watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy Thursday.
The award is given annually by the United States Basketball Writers Association to the most outstanding men's college basketball player. Since its founding in 1956, the USBWA has named a national player of the year. In the 1997-98 season, the award was named in honor of the legendary Oscar Robertson, "The Big O." In addition, the USBWA selects an All-America team and All-District teams, players and coaches of the year. This year's award will be presented at the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta in April.
In January, the USBWA will release a second watch list, followed by finalists after All-America balloting is complete in March. Duke's Zion Williamson was the recipient of last season's Oscar Robertson Trophy.
It's the fourth preseason honor for Bane who was also named one of five on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, one of 20 players on the watch list for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award and was named to the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50.
After a standout junior season, Bane ranks third in the Big 12 Conference with 18.7 points per game, while shooting 49.5 percent from the field, which ranks sixth in the Big 12, and 44.7 percent from 3-point range, which ranks second. The Richmond, Ind., native was named All-Big 12 Second Team by the Big 12 coaches and Associate Press and was USBWA All-District VII last season.
Along with being the go-to scorer for the Frogs, Bane ranks seventh in the Big 12 with 7.6 rebounds per game this season and is also averaging 3.3 assists. Bane's four games of at least 20 points is the most by a TCU player through seven games since 2002.
Bane and the Horned Frogs (6-1) continue the season Friday at 8 p.m. against USC (7-2). The first-ever basketball game at Dickies Arena will air on ESPN2.
