Horned Frogs down Red Raiders 33-31 in Lubbock
LUBBOCK, Texas – TCU and Texas Tech traded blows back-and-forth in the second half, but the Horned Frogs defense came up big in the waning moments and helped secure a 33-31 road win over the Red Raiders Saturday afternoon at Jones AT&T Stadium.
In a game that went down to the wire, TCU's defense registered a three-and-out with 4:18 left to play and then Vernon Scott forced a fumble with Trevon Moehrig making the recovery on Texas Tech's final possession to secure the victory.
The Horned Frogs scored the first 17 points of the game with touchdowns from Max Duggan and Artayvious Lynn, along with a field goal from Jonathan Song. Duggan opened the scoring with a 20-yard scamper on a 3rd-and-6 to put TCU on the board. His 26-yard run just three plays earlier got the Horned Frogs out of a 3rd-and-9 hole and extended the drive.
Wyatt Harris collected the first interception of his career as he picked off Texas Tech's third passing attempt of the game on its second series. That would lead to Song's 36-yard field goal with 7:12 still to play in the first period.
The Red Raiders were then forced to punt and TCU managed to score on its third straight drive when Duggan found Lynn from 4 yards out. It was a nine-play, 83-yard drive that ended with Lynn scoring his first career touchdown.
The Red Raiders put its first set of points on the board with a 36-yard field goal at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter, but just three plays later Duggan found Jalen Reagor for a 55-yard strike and a 24-3 lead. Texas Tech countered with a pair of touchdown passes from Jett Duffey to pull the Red Raiders within eight points, but the PAT on the second touchdown was no good.
Song booted a 28-yard field with just 2 seconds left on the clock and the Horned Frogs took a 27-16 lead into the halftime break.
Duffey tossed a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to give Texas Tech its first lead of the game. Both 2-point conversion attempts failed though and the Red Raider lead was just 28-27.
TCU's ensuing drive went 10 plays and 68 yards, which spilled over into the fourth quarter. TCU took back the lead, 30-28, on the first snap of the period with a 25-yard field goal from Song.
The two teams traded leads over their next two drives. The Red Raiders took back the lead with a 24-yard field goal at the 12:21 mark, but the Horned Frogs went back on top, 33-31, with a 20-yard field goal from Song with 5:38 remaining in the game.
After forcing the Red Raiders to a three-and-out, TCU's offense ran the clock but still had to punt, giving Texas Tech 2:23 left for a final drive. On the very first play of the drive, Duffey's pass was complete to McLane Mannix, but he was stripped by Vernon Scott and Trevon Moehrig pounced on the ball for the game-winning fumble recovery. The Horned Frogs then ran the clock out.
TCU's offense put up 549 total yards, which included 323 passing yards and a 226-yard effort on the ground. The Horned Frogs were also 15-of-24 on third-down conversions. Duggan registered new career-highs in completions (25), attempts (42) and passing yards (323), while also tossing a pair of TDs and not throwing an interception.
Taye Barber tallied a career-high eight catches and also set a new career-high with 137 receiving yards. Darius Anderson led the Horned Frogs on the ground with 87 yards on the day.
