Preview: Texas Tech Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – TCU track and field will face a deep field of ranked teams this Friday and Saturday, when the team travels to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Classic. This weekend is the first of three trips to the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center, the site of the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
MEET INFO
The meet will feature several top-25 teams, including Texas Tech (No.1 men, No.16 women), Florida (No.2 men, No.6 women), Florida State (No.3 men, No.5 women), Texas A&M (No.10 men, No.2 women), USC (No.22 men, No.7 women), Baylor (No.16 men), Miami (No.24 women), and North Carolina State (No.25 women).
TCU's field events will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday with the women's pole vault, while the running events begin at 5 p.m. with the women's 60m prelim. Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m.
A live stream of the meet will be provided via Texas Tech's athletics website and Prime Time Timing will provide live results.
LAST TIME OUT: Texas A&M Triangular
TCU competed last weekend in College Station against Texas A&M and UTEP in tri-meet action. The Horned Frogs completely swept the 60m, taking the top three spots in both the men's and women's races. Making her TCU debut, Jenea Spinks led the way for the women, followed by Destiny Longmire and Hope Glenn. On the men's side, Tinotenda Matiyenga finished first, followed by Lebogang Maloka, and Tarrick Brock. Later in the meet, Brock produced a first-place finish in the men's 200m.
In her first solo event of the year, Lily Beckford finished second in the 400m with a mark of 53.62, the tenth fastest mark in the NCAA.
In the men's 4x400, Jostyn Andrews, Emmanuel Ogwo, Matiyenga, and Derrick Mokaleng ran a top-10 mark as well, finishing in 3:07.78, the seventh fastest time in the nation.
Evelyn Mandel made her 2019 debut in dramatic fashion. Competing in the 3,000m, Mandel trailed Texas A&M's Kelsie Warren until the final lap before taking the lead and won the race with an indoor personal-best 9:41.23 mark.
Also taking home a win was Kendahl Shue, who won the women's pole vault with a school record setting 3.74m mark.

HISTORY OF INDOOR SUCCESS
TCU has a tradition of national success during the indoor season. A year ago, TCU left the NCAA meet with a third-place finisher, four total First-Team All-America honors, and three additional Second-Team honors. As a freshman, Chengetayi Mapaya finished third in the triple jump, followed by Scotty Newton in seventh. Derrick Mokaleng reached the 400m finals where he also finished seventh. Mokaleng, along with Emmanuel Ogwo, Jostyn Andrews, and Kevin McClanahan reached the 4x400m finals and finished seventh.
In the history of the indoor NCAA meet, TCU ranks No.3 all-time in the men's 60m with 119 points and four national titles, No. 8 in the women's long jump, No.11 in the men's 200m, No.17 in the men's 4x400 relay, and No. 21 in the women's 60m.
