FORT WORTH – TCU cross country opens its 2026 season at home, hosting the fourth annual John McKenzie Invitational on Friday, Sept. 4, at AP Ranch. The collegiate women's 5K is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with the men's 5K to follow at 8 a.m.
Hosted at AP Ranch in Fort Worth, the season-opening meet will honor John McKenzie and his legacy in the DFW area. McKenzie coached at TCU and North Texas from 1971-1996 and has been a staple in DFW track and field. A 1964 graduate of TCU, McKenzie was a letterwinner in track and field during his time as a student-athlete.
The Horned Frogs welcome a field that includes East Texas A&M, North Texas, Paul Quinn, SMU, Tarleton State and UT Arlington. Both TCU squads finished runner-up at last year's meet, highlighted by Johnson Lagat capturing the men's individual 5k title in 14:59.20.
On the men's side, TCU returns all five runners who scored at the 2025 NCAA South Central Regional. Lagat headlines the group after earning All-Region honors and becoming the first TCU man since 2010 to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Mohamed Kowa, CJ Meyer, Brayden Schick and Grant Martinez also return after helping the Frogs place seventh at regionals last season.
The women also bring back plenty of experience with Anastacia Gonzales, Mckenzie Bailey, Camryn Kirkland and Kate Selover returning after scoring for TCU at last year's South Central Regional. Bailey led the Frogs with a seventh-place finish at the 2025 John McKenzie Invitational, while Megan Calhoun finished 14th in her collegiate debut on this very course a year ago. TCU finished second as a team at the meet last season and went on to place 11th at the NCAA South Central Regional.
