FORT WORTH, Texas - The start of Big 12 Conference action for the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team was a battle from the first point with the Horned Frogs coming out on top, 4-2, over No. 20 Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
The victory for the Frogs (14-3, 1-0 Big 12) over the Longhorns (12-5, 0-1 Big 12) marks the eighth straight and sixth over a ranked foe this season. Texas struck first in doubles action as they used a late break to get the 6-4 win on court three. The No. 8 ranked pair of Guillermo Nuñez and Alex Rybakov evened up the battle as they topped the No. 6 ranked pair of Rodrigo Banzer and Leonardo Telles, 6-2. The doubles point all came down to court two as Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson came out victorious in a tiebreaker, 7-2, to clinch the early lead for the Frogs.
Texas fought back in singles as the teams split the opening sets on all six courts. No. 14 Rybakov came back from a slow start to down No. 58 Yuya Ito, 6-4, 6-3 on court one before Reese Stalder downed his fourth ranked opponent of the season in No. 117 Banzer, 6-4, 6-4, to give TCU a 3-0 lead in the match. The Longhorns did not back down and rebounded with wins on courts six and four to put themselves on the board. With the final two courts neck-in-neck, it was No. 74 Nuñez who clinched it as the senior came back to get a 6-7(4), 6-0, 7-6(4) victory on court three over No. 80 Harrison Scott.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"Wow! What a college match. I am so proud and pleased we were able to beat a team like Texas. It is so hard to come out on the good side of these matches and that is why I'm taking the time to enjoy it and be proud of our players. The doubles point is always nice to have. It was a great performance by our lefties at No. 1 and a clutch win by Alastair (Gray) and Trevor (Johnson).
"I felt like we got off to a great start in singles, but the Texas coaches did an awesome job to get their players to raise their level in order to win those matches and almost enough to win four in a row. Reese (Stalder) provided a huge, clutch win in singles and he has been working harder and it is showing. (Alex) Rybakov was very solid out there and then the Little Beast (Guillermo Nuñez) did it again to clinch the match. It was a great start to the conference and now we need everybody to come out next Friday against a highly-ranked Oklahoma team."
