FORT WORTH, Texas - A complete performance across doubles and singles propelled the No. 11 TCU men's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over No. 32 Tulane on Sunday evening at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs (12-3) captured their sixth straight victory and fifth straight over a ranked opponent with the win over the Green Waves (11-6). Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson got things started in doubles with a 6-2 victory on court two before the No. 26 ranked pair of Reese Stalder and Bertus Kruger wrapped up the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court three.
The momentum kept rolling in TCU's favor in singles action as straight set wins on courts two, three and five clinched the overall match victory. No. 64 Trevor Johnson picked up his fourth win over a ranked opponent with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 92 Ewan Moore. No. 114 Guillermo Nuñez continued his streak with his sixth straight win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Hamish Stewart. Just moments later, Stalder was able to score the 6-3, 6-3 win over Luis Erlenbusch. The final courts played out with Kruger picking up the straight-set win on court six before No. 33 Gray won a three-set victory on court four.
Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
"I think I saw this every time, but I was nervous about this match. We went on the road for a spring break trip and we beat highly ranked team and then we went on the road for a win against No. 6 Texas A&M. As a coach, you ask yourself are we ready to battle a very good team today? Tulane is ranked No. 32 but they are better than that. I was worried about our guys getting complacent or soft or comfortable after some really good wins on the road. We did not and it was actually the opposite. We played very well.
"We came out and took control of doubles and the best part about today is how we closed our singles matches. We had opportunities to close them out and we did. Trevor Johnson closed out a match with three aces. Reese Stalder gets his break and closes it out. Guillermo (Nuñez) comes back in the second set and closes it out. Bertus (Kruger) at No. 6 picked up a very good win. That was the best part about today. I was worried about it and I am pleased as a coach. We get a little time to gather ourselves, get a little healthier and prepare for UT Arlington."
