FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU women's basketball shot over 60 percent and grabbed an 80-68 win over Lamar in the first round of the WNIT at Schollmaier Arena on Thursday night. The Frogs will now host Missouri State in the second round on Saturday.
TCU (20-12) has won 20 games for the first time since 2010-11 and is now 5-1 all-time at home in the WNIT. The Frogs posted the fourth highest field goal percentage in school history, and needed it to combat a Lamar (22-8) team known for its aggressive defense.
Jordan Moore led TCU with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She made 10-of-11 shots and was a big part of TCU's 40-8 advantage in points in the paint. Adeola Akomolafe added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while Kianna Ray chipped in 16 points and five assists.
The Horned Frogs fought through 20 turnovers -- Lamar forces an average of 27 per game -- and posted 23 assists, including a game-high seven from Amber Ramirez.
Defining Moments
Lamar had a one-point lead, 48-47, with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter, but from there TCU made its run. Lamar didn't make a field goal for the remainder of the third quarter, and TCU used a 13-5 run to take a 60-53 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
The Frogs then forced the Cardinals into misses on their first six shots of the fourth quarter. During that span, TCU used a 12-1 run to grab its biggest lead of the game, 17 points, at 72-55. The run started with a Toree Thompson 3-pointer and ended with a Dakota Vann 3-pointer. Both of those players made a pair of 3-pointers, as did Ray, to lead the Frogs.
TCU made 7-of-15 from deep as part of its 31-of-51 effort overall for 60.8 percent. The field goal percentage is the fourth best in school history and the best in a postseason game.
Stat of the Game
20 -- TCU has won 20 games for the 12th time in program history and the first time since winning 22 games in 2010-11.
Quote of the Game
"Our crowd has been a crowd that has grown all season. We feel like TCU is turning into a basketball school and Fort Worth is getting behind basketball, both the men and women. The WNIT works that you have to win and have good crowds to keep playing at home, and I love that we're going to get another opportunity to play at home on Saturday." -- Raegan Pebley
"I was nervous about playing this team because of the style of play that they have. Nobody in our conference has a style of play like that, so I knew it was going to be a challenge. I'm really proud of how our team responded." -- Raegan Pebley
