FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships this past weekend in Pacific Palisades, Calif., with six players seeing action at the first national championship of the fall season.
Olaya Garrido-Rivas posted two wins over the tournament in singles action and was one match short of advancing to the qualifying draw at the championships. Garrido-Rivas started with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Margo Pletcher of Utah before downing Madison Battaglia of Yale, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3. Seda Arantekin and Marie Norris also picked up singles wins in the tournament with wins over opponents from Miami and Wake Forest, respectively.
In doubles action, the No. 18 pair of Arantekin and Caroline Wegner earned a spot in the main draw and after a first round loss, they bounced back with an 8-3 win over the No. 23 duo of Pletcher and Brianna Turley of Utah. The pair's run in the championship ended in the next round with an 8-4 loss to the No. 4 pair of Mira Ruder-Hook and Brienne Minor of Michigan.
Quotes from the Weekend
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"Overall I feel like the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships ended a great stretch of back-to-back-to-back tournaments for most of our girls. We had several players that were hoping to do better at nationals, but to end this stretch with three titles, multiple nationally ranked wins, a positive team chemistry and a clear action plan of what we need to improve is what makes it the best start of any season I've had at TCU.
"We feel good about where we are, but we are not satisfied. There's a team or two in our conference that performed better than us this first national championship. And the Big 12 is stronger than ever. Our work is cut out for us and we have to improve at a faster rate than other programs during this next month. Our plan is clear, our confidence is steady and our team is hungry. We plan to heal up and recover this Monday and Tuesday and get back to training Wednesday in preparation for ITA Texas Regional Championships in Waco in the next week."
