FORT WORTH, Texas -- Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year highlight the All-Big 12 awards won by the No. 6 TCU men's tennis team as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Fifth-year head coach David Roditi was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Oklahoma's John Roddick, while freshman Guillermo Nuñez earned the team's first Freshman of the Year award since TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012. The All-Big 12 tennis teams and awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
In addition to the major awards, Nuñez, Nick Chappell and Cameron Norrie were named to the All-Big 12 singles team, while Chappell and doubles partner Will Stein garnered All-Big 12 Doubles Team honors for the third consecutive season.
Roditi has returned the Horned Frog program to the top of the tennis world this season with the team reaching 21 wins for the first time since 2001 with 15 of the victories coming over ranked foes. Under Roditi's direction, TCU defeated four top-10 ranked opponents this season and competed in the 2015 ITA National Indoor Team Championships for the first time since 2001. Roditi also guided the team to its first national seed in the NCAA Championships since 2001, as the Frogs were selected No. 5 for the upcoming tournament.
Nuñez earned his honor after leading TCU with a 25-5 singles record, while also picking up 25 wins in doubles for an overall debut campaign record of 50-16. The Santiago, Chile, native put together 19 straight victories in his first season as a Horned Frog and has brought down five ranked opponents. The No. 1 freshman in the Texas region, Nuñez was nearly perfect in dual matches with an 18-1 record and has been ranked every week this season and currently sits at No. 59 in the country.
No. 49 Chappell makes an appearance on the All-Big 12 singles and doubles teams for the third consecutive season. Playing solely at the No. 1 position in singles and doubles, Chappell has racked up 18 wins in singles and 20 wins in doubles with partner Will Stein. The duo have downed eight ranked opponents this season and currently sit at No. 20 in the ITA rankings.
Norrie joins Nuñez as the only two freshmen to make the All-Big 12 singles team. Currently ranked No. 40 in singles, Norrie has 22 wins in his debut season and eight victories over ranked opponents. During the fall season and in his first competition for TCU at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, Norrie became the third freshman in 2014 to nab the singles crown at the his respective regional championships and he and Trevor Johnson became only the second all-freshmen doubles tandem in the history of the regionals to snag the doubles title as well.
The season is not over yet for TCU men's tennis team, as the Frogs is set to host the NCAA First and Second Rounds on May 8-9 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. TCU will take on Marist in the first round at 5 p.m., on Friday.
