FORT WORTH, Texas -- In its road trip finale, the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team picked up its 12th victory over a ranked opponent by downing No. 44 SMU, 4-1, on Wednesday night at the SMU Tennis Center in Dallas.
After dropping the doubles point for the second straight match, the Horned Frogs (18-6) made a comeback in singles action against the Mustangs (17-8) and took four straight-set matches to take back the match.
"Our team did a good job of bouncing back after a quick loss in doubles," head coach David Roditi said. "SMU did a good job of taking advantage of our mistakes in doubles and we never got it going at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. We have to play better in doubles in the upcoming matches if we want to win the doubles point.
"In singles, our players played well from the start and were able to win a lot of first sets which was critical. SMU is always a battle and I'm happy to keep the skillet in Fort Worth for another year. Now we play two top 10 Texas teams at home with Texas A&M this Saturday and Texas next weekend."
The No. 29 pair of Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson got TCU off to a quick start in doubles again by taking out their opponent, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. SMU also got off to a fast start on the other two courts and TCU lost 6-1 on both courts and fell early to the Mustangs, 1-0.
In singles action, No. 48 Nick Chappell rebounded from a doubles loss to put the Frogs on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Markus Kerner on court one.
Fellow seniors Arnau Dachs and Facundo Lugones would follow in the winning streak by taking out their opponents on courts four and five, respectively. Dachs dropped Arkadijs Slobodkins, 6-3, 6-2, while Lugones was able to take out Nate Lammons, 7-5, 6-3.
Freshman and No. 63 Guillermo Nuñez wrapped up the match for TCU by notching his 23rd win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Samm Butler at the No. 3 position.
"Huge thanks to the women's TCU golf team, our alumni and our fans for cheering on our guys and coming out to the match," Roditi said. "That support helped us in order to dig ourselves out of a tough spot. SMU truly has a beautiful tennis facility. Those are the best indoor courts I have ever seen anywhere in the world and it was a privilege to compete in a facility like that."
TCU will finish out the regular season at home by hosting Texas A&M on April 11 at 1 p.m., and Texas on April 18 at 1 p.m., at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
