FORT WORTH, Texas -- In front of the largest crowd of the season of 2,112 fans, the No. 7 TCU men's tennis team brought down No. 10 Texas, 4-1, for the team's first win over the Longhorns since 1996 on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (20-6, 3-2) reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2008 with the victory over the Longhorns (18-5, 2-3) and defeated their fourth opponent ranked in the top-10 this season.
"I am just really happy for the senior class and the freshmen," head coach David Roditi said. "You could tell from point one that Cameron Norrie came to play. He got us a quick doubles point and a quick singles point and then one of our seniors, Arnau Dachs, got us another quick singles point and it just us in a really good situation where all we had to do was win one of those matches. Nick Chappell did a good job of playing one of the best guys in the country, but I am proud and happy for all the seniors and especially Will Stein.
"To know where he came from, as a non-scholarship player who barely got on the team, and for him to get the opportunity to clinch the match and actually come through under so much pressure is amazing. He had so many excuses not to finish his match and even show up for singles after dropping his doubles match, but he overcame and that is the reason why he is out there because he can handle all that. He is the man. He is strong, confident and nobody rebounds better than Will Stein."
TCU grabbed a quick win in doubles action, as No. 27 Trevor Johnson and Cameron Norrie easily handled Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff, 6-1 on court two. The duo now have 18 wins on the season and have won their last six straight competitions.
The final two doubles courts would go into tiebreakers for the match decisions and Texas came out on top on court one to even the doubles battle. Guillermo Nuñez and Hudson Blake would finish off the match in TCU's favor by taking their tiebreaker, 7-4, and claiming the early 1-0 lead for the Frogs.
No. 43 Norrie carried his momentum into singles action and gave TCU the 2-0 lead after downing No. 49 Berkowicz, 6-4, 6-0 for his 20th win this season and sixth over a ranked opponent. Dachs followed just moments behind by finishing off Clement Homs, 6-1, 6-3 on court five.
Texas would pick up its lone point on court one with a victory from Søren Hess-Olesen, but the captain Stein would be the clincher as the senior took his second-set tiebreaker, 10-8 to finish out his last regular season home match with a victory for TCU.
"From everyone in our program, we just want to thank every single person that came out and every single person that shared our tweets and participated in our tennis ball contests," Roditi said. "We just want to thank all of the Horned Frog fans and we hope that we made you proud. We are proud of our school, we are proud of the atmosphere out there and I thought it was respectful and the way a college match should be. I couldn't be any happier with how everything went today." TCU will now wait for their seeding in the Big 12 Tennis Championships that will take place from April 24-26 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
