WACO, Texas - Despite a little bit of a rain delay, the No. 6 TCU men's tennis team was triumphant on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over No. 29 Oklahoma State in the quarterfinal of the 2015 Big 12 Tennis Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.
Due to the altered schedule because of inclement weather, the Horned Frogs (21-6, 3-2) and the Cowboys (16-9, 0-5) started with singles action and TCU was able to grab four straight-set victories to move into the semifinals of the championship and notch their seventh straight victory of the season.
"I am very pleased with the way our team came out of the gate," head coach David Roditi said. "We won every first set on all six courts and our team handled a lot of the changes well today. There were questions if we were going to play indoors or outdoors, singles or doubles first, when do we eat and finally the changing of the match time. Our guys handled it really well and got a good warm-up and came out playing as well as we could play.
"I thought it was great to see our fans come out here and support us on a neutral site. Our women's team came out and supported us and that is very much appreciated. What a great performance today by Will Stein. For him to come out there and win 6-0, 6-1 was a very good first point for our team."
Senior Will Stein was able to get the first point for TCU, as the captain served up a big ace in his commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ferrigno. Stein reached the 21-win plateau with the victory and won his fourth consecutive match.
TCU was able to pick up points two and three in just moments apart as Facundo Lugones downed Tristan Meraut, 6-1, 6-1 on court four, while No. 40 Cameron Norrie took out No. 119 Arjun Kadhe at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-3. Norrie has picked up his 21st victory as well, while Lugones notched win No. 18 and his ninth straight victory.
The clincher came from senior Arnau Dachs who knocked out Lukas Finzelberg, 6-3, 6-3, on court five for his 21st victory of the season.
"We just beat a very good team and for us to beat a team like Oklahoma State and not have to go to doubles is huge and I think that is probably going to help us for tomorrow," Roditi said. "We have a very tough match against Baylor on their home courts and they are one of the best teams in the nation. The fact that we were able to not go to doubles and not drag it on too much will help the guys tomorrow."
TCU will take on No. 2 Baylor in the semifinals on Saturday at Noon on the Grandstand Courts of the Hurd Tennis Center.
