FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 20 TCU women's tennis team collected its third shutout in conference play with a 4-0 victory at home over No. 31 Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (12-7, 4-2) fought a tough battle from the Sooners (11-6, 0-4) in doubles action, before gutting out three singles matches to complete the shut out and pick up the team's 12th win of the season.
"The last four Big 12 matches were all very tough, and it's nice to come away with two solid wins over Texas and Oklahoma, as well as gain some valuable experience with Baylor and Oklahoma State," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "Today, it was windy and hot and it took some time to adjust to the conditions for several girls, but once they did they were fine.
"I am really happy about where we are right now as a team. Over the next three weeks, we will focus on our fitness/health, doubles and individual needs. It's time to get into training/improving mode because we only have a few weeks left to prepare for the conference tournament."
Sofiko Kadzhaya and Simona Parajova got TCU started with a win on court three in doubles, as the duo picked up their 12th win of the season and remained undefeated at No. 3 doubles with a 9-0 record by downing Zita Engbroks and Christina Brigante, 6-4.
The doubles point would be wrapped up on court two, as Palina Dubavets and Alexis Pereira broke Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi and then held serve to win their 14th match of the season, 7-5 and clinch the early lead and doubles point for TCU.
In singles action Pereira was able to record her 18th win of the season by taking out Malene Stripp, 6-1, 6-2, to be the first off the courts for the second match in a row. Senior and No. 108 Stefanie Tan dominated her match at No. 1 singles from start-to-finish and defeated Miyazaki, 6-1, 6-0 to put the Frogs firmly in the lead, 3-0.
The fourth point would not come easy, as three of the remaining four matches headed into a third set. Dubavets would ultimately clinch the match for the Frogs, as the freshman won her first set, 6-2, over Engbroks, before heading into a tiebreaker in the second set. Dubavets came out on top with a 9-7 win to seal the shutout for TCU.
The Frogs will hit the road for a nonconference match against North Texas on April 1 at 2 p.m., in Denton, Texas.
