FORT WORTH, Texas - Facing the top team in the nation, the No. 10 TCU men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 1 Oklahoma on Friday night at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
Guillermo Nuñez was able to up his winning streak to 19 straight in singles action to give the Horned Frogs (14-6, 0-2) a point, but the top ranked Sooners (18-1, 1-0) proved to be too much in the end as they took the doubles point and three singles courts to win the match.
"That was a good college match," head coach David Roditi said. "We played well in all our matches. When we play the No. 1 team on the road, we must capitalize on our opportunities. We lost eight games at deuce at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and we will learn from that and it will make us a better team next time out. Maybe it's the fact Oklahoma has forgotten how to lose that helped them in those situations, so they deserve credit for that.
"I thought Guillermo and Nick (Chappell) were competing exceptionally well. We have never beaten Dane Webb in a dual match and Guillermo was able to give us that point to even the match at 1-1. Now we must prepare for a tough Oklahoma State on Sunday."
In doubles action, the Sooners were able to get the wins on courts one and two to take the doubles point from TCU. No. 6 Axel Alvarez and Dane Webb were able to defeat No. 19 Nick Chappell and Will Stein for the first win, while No. 18 Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson were upset, 6-3, by Alex Ghilea and Andrew Harris on court two.
No. 76 Nuñez was able to get the lone win for TCU to open singles action by dominating No. 23 Webb at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2 to keep his winning streak alive. The freshman picked up his third win of the season against a ranked opponent and 22nd overall.
Oklahoma responded by taking straight-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 1 positions, with the final three courts headed in the decisive third set. No. 65 Ghilea fought off a tough battle from senior Arnau Dachs at No. 4 singles to clinch the win for the Sooners with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win.
With the rest of the matches called, No. 36 Chappell was leading No. 2 Alvarez in the third set 3-2, while Facundo Lugones was down 3-2 to Florin Bragusi in the final set on court six.
TCU will continue action on the road by traveling to No. 22 Oklahoma State for a matchup on Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m.
