FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 10 TCU men's tennis team was able to notch its first Big 12 Conference win of the season by taking out No. 22 Oklahoma State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.
The Horned Frogs (15-6, 1-2) used a team effort to topple the Cowboys (15-5) and get its fifth win on the road.
"I am really proud of our team. It took a full team effort for the win today. The freshmen and Hudson stepped up in doubles and all of them are playing really good doubles right now. The four of them battled through some really tough situations to get the doubles point.
"The seniors stepped up in singles and everyone contributed today. We had a good feeling that we were going to play well based on the preparation all week. We played well against Oklahoma, but they were just better. To be able to beat a well-coached team that is ranked No. 22 means we are doing something right and we are very proud of our guys."
In doubles competition, No. 18 Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson were able to control their match and take the first victory of the day with a 6-2 win over Lucas Gerch and Nicolai Ferrigno at No. 2 doubles. Hudson Blake and Guillermo Nuñez finished up the point for TCU on court three by downing Lukas Finzelberg and Jurence Mendoza, 6-4, to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Oklahoma State tied up the match to start singles action by claiming the win on court one, before senior Facundo Lugones responded by claiming a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mendoza at No. 6 singles to make it 2-1 in favor of the Frogs. Lugones has won four straight matches and is 13-4 on the season.
Senior and No. 36 Nick Chappell grabbed his seventh win of the season at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Lucas Gerch to put TCU up 3-1. Chappell has now won his last eight matches and has 17 overall wins on the season.
The Cowboys would record one more win in the match by taking court five, but TCU would finish off and clinch the match with final senior Arnau Dachs taking out Finzelberg, 7-5, 6-3, for the 4-2 victory.
"I also want to thank the Oklahoma State staff and their athletic trainer," Roditi said. "They were very hospitable and great hosts and we will definitely remember that when they come to our facility next year.
"What Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood have done to give the resources necessary to make their facility the best in college tennis is phenomenal. They really thought about what makes a great college tennis facility."
TCU will return home and will welcome Texas Tech on April 2 at 5:30 p.m., before taking on nonconference foe USF on April 4 at 1 p.m., at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
