FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 18 men's tennis team returned to its winning ways by toppling Rice, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in Houston, Texas.
The Horned Frogs (6-3) and the Owls (7-7) were moved indoors because of the inclement weather and only participated in singles action. TCU was able to triumphantly take two of the first three matches, before winning two three-set victories at the bottom of the lineup to take the team win.
"I thought our team kept our composure extremely well," head coach David Roditi said. "We beat a tough team in a tough situation having to play indoors on three courts last minute. I am proud of those players who did a great job battling the three set matches. We had a young line up out there and getting three wins from our freshmen was huge. Trevor Johnson impressed me the way he won that third set tiebreaker to clinch the match. He's been working very hard and deserves it."
Singles action in positions one, two and three started out the match as No. 18 Cameron Norrie was able to get off the courts first with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Srikar Alla at No. 1 singles. No. 48 Nick Chappell needed three sets to defeat Adam Gustafsson at No. 2 singles after splitting the first two sets. The senior dominated the final set, 6-1, to pick up his 10th win of the season.
Rice was able to get on the board with a win at No. 3 singles, but No. 112 Guillermo Nuñez fired back and put TCU up 3-1 with a three-set victory of his own at No. 4 singles. Nuñez had to make a comeback after dropping the first set 6-1 and fired back to take the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0 to win the match.
The final freshman on the team, Johnson, would wrap up and clinch the match for the Frogs as he won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles. Johnson was able to win the first set, 6-0, but dropped the second set 6-3. Johnson went game-for-game with David Warren and came out on top, 7-5, in the tiebreaker in the final set to finish out the match for TCU.
TCU will return home for a double-header at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center, as the Frogs will take on Wisconsin and Incarnate Word on Sunday, March 1. TCU will face the Badgers at Noon and Incarnate Word at 4:30 p.m.
