FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 15 TCU men's tennis team posted two victories on Sunday with a 6-1 win over Wisconsin to start the day and a 5-1 victory over Incarnate Word to end the day in the indoor facility at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (8-3) had to fight off a tough Badger (2-9) team that took the doubles point before toppling the Cardinals (5-8) late in the day.
"Anytime you win against a team like Wisconsin, you did something right," head coach David Roditi said. "Wisconsin came with energy and toughness and I am proud of our four singles player who pulled out a win today to seal the team victory. Nick Chappell had a very good day in doubles and singles and it was good to see him and Will Stein play well at the No. 1 position and get the victory.
"I am disappointed in the doubles play by the team today. We pride ourselves in being a good doubles school, but we did not perform today. We are going to have to try different combos to see if we can return to playing at a high caliber level in doubles."
TCU opened the day against Wisconsin in doubles action and the Badgers came to battle and quickly took the win on court three. TCU responded with a 6-4 victory by No. 20 Nick Chappell and Will Stein at No. 1 doubles for the duo's 15th win this season.
The match decision would all come down to court two, with Cameron Norrie and Guillermo Nuñez having to go into a tiebreaker with Jose Carranza and Josef Dodridge. The Frog pair fought off three match points, but the Badger prevailed in the end, 8-6, to steal the doubles point and go up 1-0 in the match.
No. 110 Facundo Lugones got TCU on the board by being the first off the court in singles action with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Darius Mackenzie on court five to bring the match even at 1-1. No. 28 Cameron Norrie wrapped up his match next by downing Dodridge on court one, 6-2, 6-3 to put TCU in the lead 2-1.
No. 48 Chappell made it 3-1 in favor of TCU by taking the second set tiebreaker and his match, 6-0, 7-6 over Lamar Remy. Guillermo Nuñez clinched the match for the Frogs by winning his 11th straight match with a 7-5, 7-6 win on court three to seal the victory for the team.
With the match already won for TCU, Arnau Dachs and Trevor Johnson finished out their respective matches, with Dachs winning by retirement at No. 4 singles and Johnson wiping out his opponent, 6-0, 6-3 on court six.
TCU next faced Incarnate Word for the first time in program history to close out the double header and only played singles matches against the Cardinals.
"I am very proud of the way the players executed in the final match," Roditi said. "We got to have players compete who don't normally see time in the lineup and its was good to see them compete and play well. I was most proud of Will Stein and his ability to get a win at the top spot. It was also great to see one of our seniors, Blake Wiggins, continue his undefeated spring singles streak for four straight seasons."
Trey Daniel competed in his first match of the day and got TCU up 1-0 in the match with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 victory on court four. The Frogs went up 2-0 with Lugones finishing off Joey Vatanadilok, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, while Stein picked up his first victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Leonard Ivic.
The Cardinals snagged their only victory of the day with a win on court three, before Hudson Blake finished off the match for TCU with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Wiggins sealed off the day with a win of his own and came back after dropping the first set to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
TCU's next action will be opening conference play with No. 5 Baylor on the road in Waco on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m., at the Hurd Tennis Center.
