FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU opened Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Sunday afternoon with a 76-47 win over Southern Utah to conclude non-conference play.
The Frogs used an early 20-2 run to jump ahead 22-4 in the opening seven minutes of play, including a pair of three-point field goals from senior Zahna Medley and one from sophomore AJ Alix. Freshman Jordan Moore also had seven points during the run as she was also credited with the first basket in a women's basketball game in the new arena.
"I think one of the coolest things about today and being able to play this first game in the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena is that we get to do it again. It was so fun," said head coach Raegan Pebley. "It really sunk in as the game was going on in my head thinking, `this is our home now, and we get to keep experiencing this amazing place.' We are really grateful. We had a great crowd.
"Southern Utah was very patient with us since we had to change things up on them over the last few months, and their coach is one of my oldest friends in the business. It couldn't have happened more perfectly than someone like him was scheduled to play this game. With the game, I was very happy to see us establish such balanced scoring. We had a great start. Our defense locked in to start the game. Our first half was our better half today. Our third quarter was our worst quarter, but it was great to see us recover from that in the fourth."
The Frogs had seven players score in the opening quarter and led 29-9 after 10 minutes en route to the victory. The Frogs shot 52.6 percent, eclipsing the 50 percent mark for the second time in three games, and hit 10-of-19 from three-point range to get the win.
Four Horned Frogs scored in double figures, including senior Veja Hamilton's team-high 18 points. Hamilton hit her first six shots of the game and finished 9-of-14 from the field.
The Frogs finished non-conference play with a record of 8-3 for the second consecutive season but were handed losses by two teams ranked in the top 12 nationally. The Frogs open Big 12 Conference play following a short holiday break coming off the heels of a third place finish in the league a year ago.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
"It was really exciting," said senior Zahna Medley. "It was cool to play in the arena. I love the locker rooms, and I love the facility in general. It's really cool to see the dramatic change from how the [Daniel Meyer Coliseum] looked. It was fun to be back out there."
