FORT WORTH, Texas (September 21, 2014) - Doubles duo Arnau Dachs and Guillermo Nuñez, along with senior Will Stein were victorious and won their respective brackets on Sunday at the Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La.
Dachs and Nuñez posted four straight wins to win the main draw doubles brackets, while Stein earned his first win over a ranked opponent in his career by defeating No. 56 George Goldhoff of Texas in the finals of the consolation singles bracket.
"It is great anytime you can win a tournament," coach David Roditi said. "Arnau and Guillermo played well all week and the best part is that there is still lots of room for improvement. We got some breaks in the final and we were able to close it out even though we didn't play our best tennis. This is a great result against some of the top teams in the country, which should build some confidence moving into the ITA All-American Championships next week.
"Another highlight was Will Stein's singles play. He beat some very good players and showed he can contribute to our single lineup as well. The tournament did a great job making the coaches and players feel special. Drew and Erin Meyer, our host family, did an unbelievable job taking care of the guys and came to support all of our matches. This was a great way to expose out guys to some top competition before the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa."
Dachs and Nuñez began the tournament by taking out Chris Simpson and Jordan Daigle of LSU in a tiebreaker, with the TCU duo coming away with an 8-7(5) win. The pair moved on to face Edgar Lopez and Damien Farinola of Louisiana-Lafayette and easily handled the Ragin Cajuns, 8-2, to move into the semifinals.
It would take three sets to defeat Jon Ho and Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest, as a super tiebreaker third set would ultimately decide the match. The TCU pair won the first set 7-5, but dropped the second set tiebreaker 7-6(5). Dachs and Nuñez regrouped and pulled out all the stops to take the super tiebreaker 11-6 and earn a berth into the finals.
The TCU duo dominated in the finals and took down Tam Trinh and Andrew Korinek of LSU 6-2, 6-3 to win their first title of the fall season.
After a first round loss in the main draw singles bracket, Stein rebounded to win five matches to claim the consolation singles crown. Stein opened the bracket by earning a victory over Korinek by walkover, before downing Farinola 6-4, 6-3 in the next round.
Stein moved on to face Michael Riechmann of Texas and needed three sets to bring down the Longhorn, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0. The senior would then face another Big 12 foe in Lucas Gerch and needed three sets once again to take out the Cowboy. Stein dropped the first set 6-4, but regrouped and defeated Gerch 6-4, 6-1 to move into the finals. Stein would win the bracket over Goldhoff by walkover.
TCU will continue fall play by heading to Tulsa, Okla., to participate in the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships on Sept. 28-Oct. 5.
