"It was a tough first half and we didn't start off the best. It was a really scrappy, ugly half," said head coach Eric Bell. "We were able to make it into a soccer game in the second half. We created more opportunities and score some goals to wrap up a tough road trip."
TCU outshot the Bearkats 18-7, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Meghan Murphy led all shooters with five shots, followed closely by four from Heckendorn. Vittoria Arnold stopped one of the two shots that came her way.
"Emma (Heckendorn) has done well and so has Kela Gray. Allison Ganter gave us some really postitve minutes," said Bell on the maturation of his freshmen. "They are figuring out that college soccer is different than club and high school soccer. They are learning that the physicality and pressure is tougher. The players are bigger, faster and stronger. They are not as uncomfortable as they were a month ago. We've seen a lot of improvement in all areas which will be needed for when we start conference play."
The Horned Frogs came out firing in the first half as they outshot the Bearkats 9-4. In addition, the Frogs earned eight corner kicks, but they came up empty as Bearkat goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton made all four stops she needed to in the half.
TCU started firing early and often. Two minutes in the Frogs earned their first of 17 corner kicks in the match. Michelle Prokof's feed was true, but Meghan Murphy's header was wide of the goal. Sam Houston State countered with three shots of its own, but the Frog defense stood tall, forcing a shot wide and blocking the other two.
Another corner in the 21st minute saw TCU with a golden opportunity to get on the board. Makenzie Koch took the corner and found Heckendorn, but her shot was blocked away by Hambleton setting up another corner. Murphy was stoned again by Hambleton in the 29th minute off another corner kick feed by Koch. Ryan Williams' rebound shot attempt was also saved by Hambleton.
The second half got off to a fast start as the Frogs were whistled for a foul in the penalty box. Arnold stood tall in goal as she stopped Mariah Titus' penalty kick attempt just two minutes into the half.
Four minutes later the Frogs hit paydirt. TCU was whistled for an offside setting up a free kick for the Bearkats. The Frogs won the battle on the short kick setting up a golden opportunity. Michelle Prokof fed the ball right to the feet of Heckendorn and she made it count as she scored to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
The Frogs kept the pressure on and were rewarded again five minutes later. A pair of corner kicks eventually paid off as Jill Finnerty sent a cross right to the feet of Heckendorn who scored her second goal of the match.
Ten minutes later a flurry of activity saw the Frogs and the Bearkats trade goals. Bobbi Clemmer hit a streaking Kela Gray who's shot was true for a 3-0 lead. Just seconds later, friendly fire halted the Frogs shutout streak. Trying to clear the ball out of the goal box, the ball deflected past a surprised Arnold to give the Bearkats their only goal of the game.
The victory improves TCU to 5-3 on the season. The Frogs return home Friday night to play host to Metroplex rival, SMU. First touch is set for 7 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal.
