COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU junior Zach Nichols and senior Nina Munch-Soegaard have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively.
Nichols, who hails from Austin, Texas, went a combined 2-0 last week to lead No. 39 TCU to a 6-1 victory over No. 24 Tulsa. Playing at the No. 2 singles spot for the first time in his career against the Golden Hurricane, Nichols recorded a come-from-behind victory, defeating 31st-ranked Ashley Watling (2-6, 6-3, 6-0) to clinch the match. The junior also helped the Horned Frogs secure the doubles point against Tulsa, teaming with freshman Soren Goritzka to secure a win over Rusty Turpin/Grant Ive (9-8 (11-9)) at the No.2 position. The honor is the second of the season for Nichols after also claiming the award on Jn. 27 for his efforts against Texas Pan-American and UT Arlington to open the season.
Munch-Soegaard, a product of Amarillo, Texas, went a combined 3-1 over the weekend against No. 47 Texas A&M and No. 43 Illinois, respectively. On Saturday, Munch-Soegaard downed 57th-ranked Elze Potgieter (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5)) at No. 1 singles after teaming with junior Maria Babanova to defeat Christi Liles/Morgan Frank (8-7(6)) at No. 2 doubles. Against the Illini on Sunday, the tandem of Munch-Soegaard and Babanova defeated Chelcie Abajian/Rachael White (8-5) to help TCU record its first doubles point at home this season. The honor is the first for Munch-Soegaard this season and the fifth of her career.
The TCU women's team will return to action on March 15, traveling to take on No. 18 Miami, while the men's squad will host No. 55 Columbia at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 2 p.m. on March 16.
