FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 32 TCU women's tennis team will travel into the Southeastern Conference this weekend to challenge No. 58 Alabama (Feb. 27) and No. 46 Auburn (Feb. 28). The Horned Frogs will compete against teams outside of the ITA top-30 for the first time this season.
The Horned Frogs (1-5) are coming off of a tough 4-3 loss at No. 8 Michigan on Wednesday. Senior Nina Munch-Soegaard picked up her first singles win of the year, taking down No. 16 Denise Muresan from the top position, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (6). Despite the loss to the Wolverines, the match was the first of the year for the Frogs' to win at the top three singles positions.
No. 58 Alabama (4-3) comes into the weekend after winning its last two matches over Georgia State and No. 73 Oregon. The Tide have enjoyed a 3-0 record at the Crimson Racket Club and boast two ranked singles players in No. 68 Alexa Guarachi and No. 83 Courtney McLane. Guarachi and McLane also team up to form the No. 51 doubles tandem in the country.
No. 46 Auburn (5-2) rides a three-match winning streak into the showdown with TCU on Saturday, sweeping Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State and Troy. No. 59 Fani Chifchieva leads the Tigers as the only ranked singles player on the roster, while freshman Plamena Kurteva has exploded to a 7-0 singles clip.
The Frogs are looking to avenge a 4-3 home loss to the Tide last spring that gave Alabama a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. TCU earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over Auburn at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to give the Frogs 2-1 bragging rights in three meetings with the Tigers.
TCU will return home to host Texas A&M and Illinois, March 6-7, at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
