In a contest that featured 16 lead changes and 10 ties, the Frogs missed on several chances to take control of the game late. Emily Carter led the TCU offensive attack Saturday, scoring 14 points on 3-of-14 shooting, while sophomore Starr Crawford just missed a double-double with 13 points and eight boards.Helena Sverrisdottir tallied 10 points and nine boards at the Virgin Islands University Sports & Fitness Center. The senior from Iceland was named to the all-tournament team following competition Saturday.
Virginia, who shot over 90 percent on 10-of-11 shooting from the charity stripe Saturday, was led by Chelsea Shine, who scored a game-high 20 points. Lexie Gerson and Paulisha Kellum both recorded 10 points, respectively, including several key buckets down the stretch after TCU tried to break the game open.
The Cavaliers rallied to take a 55-53 lead with only 33.7 seconds left to go before senior Micah Garoutte appeared to have brought TCU within one with 12 seconds left, but the senior's lay-up rolled out to keep the score at 57-54 in favor of the Cavaliers. Garoutte, who was fouled on the play, would make her second of two free throws, but Virginia added two more free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Garoutte's three-point play at the 2:39 mark of the second half moved the Frogs' closer and Crawford gave the Purple and White the lead on a fast-break with 2 minutes to play in the game.
Earlier in the half, UVA pushed its lead to eight on an 11-3 run with only 10 minutes remaining in the game before Sverrrisdottir connected from behind the arc to make the score 43-40. Freshman Briesha Wynn tied the ballgame at 43-43 a few moments later on a three of her own, which was part of an 8-0 run by the Frogs.
Carter's three from the left side of the court, lifted the Purple and White, but the Cavaliers answered right back, scoring a three of their own to make the score 33-31 halfway through the second half.
Crawford gave TCU the lead at 27-26 early in the second period, but UVA continued to battle, regaining the momentum on a backdoor layup at the 16:09 mark.
Carter's three off a skip pass from Sverrisdottir gave TCU an early 7-6 lead in the ballgame, but Shine ignited a mini-run for the Cavaliers, scoring four of UVA's first five buckets to take back the lead.
A few moments later, Wynn received an outlet pass from Antoinette Thompson to put TCU back in front halfway through the first half, 15-14.
Following another Shine jumper that made the score 18-15 in favor of Virginia, the Frogs turned up the defensive pressure, holding UVA scoreless for nearly 3 minutes of play.
Crawford quickly went to work, connecting on four-straight points to regain the Horned Frog lead, but it was short lived as the Cavaliers fought back at the 2:39 mark of the first half on a Gerson jumper. Crawford scored late in the half, connecting on a hard-fought three-point play to tie the contest at 21-21 and both teams traded baskets to bring the halftime score to 24-24.
Virginia moved to 4-3 on the season, while TCU dropped to 3-3 with the loss.
The Horned Frogs will return to action Thursday, Dec. 2 at home against Houston. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
